"BMW Manufacturing Company LLC has revealed to AutomotiveWorld.com that production of the BMW Z4 Roadster, M Roadster, Z4 Coupe and M Coupe has ended. All these cars were built exclusively at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

The last car was made on 28 August, with 197,950 vehicles produced over the Z4's five-year lifecycle. Bobby Hit, a spokesman for BMW's US manufacturing operations, states that 180,856 vehicles were roadsters and 17,094 were coupes. Despite the name, the latter was in fact a hatchback."

so the worldwide breakdown is...

roadsters - 180,856
///m roadsters - ???

coupes - 12,819
///m coupes - 4,275

i saw that, but didn't want to confuse the article...

the discrepency appears to be in the roadster numbers. i wonder if the original author got it wrong, or if Bobby Hitt had it wrong when he gave the interview back in 2008.

Roadsters (non-m) - 175,786
M Roadsters (North America) - 3,042
M Roadsters (Other) - 2,028
E85 Total = 180,856

Coupes (non-m) - 12,819
M Coupes (North America) - 1,815
M Coupes (Other) - 2,460
E86 Total = 17,094

I'm not sure I understand the discrepancy. I just used those numbers you provided and subtracted out the M numbers.

i didn't use my brain when thinking about the TOTAL roadster number vs. the OTHER TOTAL roadster number that would have also included the ///m's.

so... there you have it. a TOTAL breakdown of my mental capacity. all of you should feel honored to have witnessed it.

Big difference between M and non-M. Maybe I will get an M Roadster and just hang onto it and pass it down to my son. Might be a classic one of these days. I read another thread that BMW might get hit with a special tax since the gas mileage on these sportscars aren't good enough.

A special tax on E85/86's? How would this happen? The cars were produced to the specs at the time and gas guzzler taxes, etc were already paid.

Old thread, but here are my thoughts. Everyone is always talking about how rare the M coupe is. Apparently the 3.0si coupe is even more rare. Also, the M roadster is pretty rare too, with 3,042 produced in North America vs 1,815 M coupes. We all know the M coupe is starting to rise in value. Let's say in 10 years it becomes a rare and expensive collectors car. Do you think the M roadster and/or 3.0si coupe will start to appreciate once the M coupe prices have stabilized?

I think the roadster will appreciate, but the coupe will always outpace it. The coupe has a number of combinations that make it unique: the low numbers produced, the unique body shape, and the last of the old school M engines. The roadster has some of that, but I think it will have appeal for a different reason. I think vintage roadsters have almost universal appeal with the public, but the M roadster will not appeal as much to the true collector, unless it is some rarity like kept in a heated garage with 2000 miles on it in pristine shape. It's just really fun to have the top down on a roadster, the tight handling, the M engine. I can see many of us saving the roadster for taking our grandkids out for a ride in grandpa's cool car, passing it on to our kid when we're too old to drive, etc.

I think a lot of folks up to now have overlooked these cars. They didn't know they exist. What is great is that for $25K or less, you can usually get a low mileage M roadster, sink another $10K into it over the life of ownership, and if you don't put a ton of miles on it, can probably sell it for $30K in 10 years. You're basically getting the use of the car for free. I had this discussion with a friend. If you're really good at spotting the hot new cars like the 1M, you can buy it, drive it as long as you like, and sell it at a profit. So, that very expensive rare car is actually free of charge. You just have to pick the right car and don't get into a wreck. :-)

The numbers I have seen say that there were more 3.0si coupes made than M coupes. However there were fewer 3.0si coupes with a manual gearbox. These are all North American production numbers FWIW.

Hummmm! I bought my 2008 Zsi last year because I wanted a two-seat convertible! I paid more for it because it only had 41K, was never in a wreck (according to Car Fax), and had an auto trans (torn my left knee meniscus)! I never thought for a moment that it might be worth more down the road. Back in the day, I worked for a BMW Motorcycle dealer and got to go to Spartanburg, SC, and watched Z4s being built. Never knew that one day I'd own one!
