Oil Changes

I know the car has a built-in service indicator based on mileage and how the car's driven but do any of you get an oil change inbetween the recommended times or is that not necessary? Just curious. I'm at about 33K miles on my Z4MC, and about 10K miles post service one.

I do a lot of city driving and change my oil every 3 - 3.5k. I personally feel an oil change is the cheapest and best way to take care of your engine.

I changed my at half the recommendated interval (every 7.5k or so). I should send some samples out for testing to know for sure but i think the oil should be OK at that interval

Once a year (Spring out of storage) and/or every 5-6,000 miles for me.

General consensus seems to be every ~7.5k miles. It won't hurt if you do it sooner.

My Z4MC sees a lot of HPDS track miles so I change 10W-60 oil every 4000 miles and do a Blackstone oil analysis.
Blackstone Oil Analysis S54 Oct 2010.pdf
If it was a daily driver only I'd probably stretch the OCI out to 7,500 miles.

I'm a daily driver and it seems automatically that the sensors tells you need to change your oil sooner....unless you do a lot of freeway miles.

Every 10k miles here, supported by multiple Blackstone analyses.

Daily driver, mostly highway.

3-5k here. As mentioned above, cheap and worthwhile. My drive is 7 miles to and from work in stop and go traffic and a weekend out here and there.

So true! The oil changes are cheap (esp. if you do it yourself) insurance to making sure your engine lasts a long time.

Blackstone is an excellent way of establishing what OCI is best for you AND for monitoring for abnormalities.

I have an 3.0si, but here's my first UOA I did since the car was new to me:

Wow, that is really great deal! BMW recommends Castrol 10W-60 for the M (S54 Engine). It take almost 6 bottles at around $13 each plus the filter so it is almost $100 for DIY! That being said, still pretty cheap insurance for every 7.5k or so.

I honestly have no idea how he does it. If I got Mobile 1 from Wallyworld and the $13 filter I'd still be close to or over $65. He has a pretty big BMW client base based on the cars at his shop. I need to see what brand he uses. That I'm not sure of. He's been around a long time and people seem to love his shop and the work he's done.

off topic but when replacing the filter, are we supposed to take the sleeve that's around the filter off or leave it around it? I am talking about the mesh cardboard thing around the filter

Haven't done one on my Z4MC yet! However, it look like it is some kind of packaging (like those styrafoams use to protect fruits). I would most likely removed it if i was doing my own oil change.

That's what I thought too but when I saw the instructions on the oil change on Bill's page, looked like he put the filter in with the sleeve still on it.

Sleeve stays on as it keeps the pleated filter paper from expanding when saturated with oil.

Interesting and i makes some senses. However, my buddy uses Mann filters for his e46 M3 and the 5series but we never seen the sleeve on any of the filter. Must be BMW OEM thing?
