Optimal tire width/ size for grip. Street

Beyond stock sizes, what is the best front and rear wheel / tire spec from your experience? I am interested more in performance than looks.
18, or 19 inch?
I suspect 18 for weight
What about tires? Max fit, grip, weight combination?
235/265?
245/275?
I do not intend to make suspension changes beyond stock M.

18 inch wheels not only for weight, but for sidewall thickness.

If you're running stock widths, 235/265 any day. If you're running 245/275 on a stock wheel width, you're pushing the limits of the wheel. The tire will start to shimmy back and forth on the wheel under a load before it reaches a point where it can start providing additional grip.

I run Hankook RS3s. The big contenders in high performance tires are the Dunlop Z2s, Bridgestone Rivals, and RS3s.

Here are what the RS3s look like on a stock wheel, 235/265 for me:

You'll have to run a 5mm spacer in the rear to avoid some rubbing (I was rubbing under high-g load turns during autocross)

+1 on 235/265

and pulling the pins for slight neg camber wouldn't be bad neither.

You will gain far more in grip from a switch in brand/compound than you EVER WILL with wider tires. EVAH.

HAVING SAID THAT.

If you can manage to break the traction loose on the stock tires regularly enough on the street, you're basically a statistic waiting to happen, IMO. There's too many variables that's out of your control for any meaningful increase in performance to be gained.

Now, if you're telling me that you don't care about performance but are after the looks from the honeys because, you know, chicks dig FAT tires? I'd tell you to go ahead and run 245F/275R width tires because that 20mm width is visibly noticeable. Other than that, any upgrade in width compared to a compound upgrade is meaningless because the additional width will only buy you extra heat capacity, heat capacity in which you will NEVER be able to exceed on the street.

Stock 225/255 tire sizes are fine for street on stock rims. I would recommend better tires though.

18's also ride better due to more sidewall than 19's.

I run 18x8.5/18x10 rims with 245/275 tires for track and have been very happy with the setup.
