Hunting Season

Early this morning (~4AM) I was driving back to DC from Penn State (was at the Penn State Michigan game last night) when a deer decided to suddenly jump into the highway while I was doing 70 mph. I was able to to avoid hitting the deer head on by slamming on the brakes - thankfully the gf and myself are OK, however the coupe has received a good amount of cosmetic damage.

Car drives fine and there is absolutely no mechanical damage.

Front fender and rear fender are dented, along with the hood. Driver's headlight is destroyed.

Hit one myself in 1983 at 70mph in West Virginia 2am - one week old RX7 - coming home from Charlotte - the bastards dance around a little bit just before you hit them; very similar to your story...

I go to PSU and the deer are everywhere here at night. Thankfully you were able to slow down before the collision. My buddy hit one before he could touch the brakes, and his rx8 was totaled.

Glad you guys are OK. I hope everything goes smoothly with your car.

The beauty of the M Coupe is that all the body panels are bolted on....Sorry to hear about your accident. Here is a link to the body parts.... check out http://www.realoem.com to get an idea.

Always a sad sight to see a Z4M beat up. Thankfully it does all look superficial, and what's important is that you and your GF are okay.

I think there are nine bolts hold the fender on but not quit sure. May be less.

I removed the entire headlight housing that was still bolted into the car tonight. Undid the wiring that led to the headlights to make sure they didn't get buggered up and routed them to the engine bay and zip tied them. Everything there looks OK.

Pulled the fender out a little bit to get it away from the front tire. Zip tied everything back together pretty well - no lose parts flying around. After close inspection of the car, all the damage looks to definitely be cosmetic.

Damn... I feel just gutted seeing your nice ride blemished like that. Good thing you're both alright.

I'm a little sad for your front reflector too (inside joke)

Thanks

Hahaha - ironically enough, the painted reflector was sitting on the top of the undertray - so I still have it!

Deer are everywhere in general in the northeast this time of year. I was acutally in Gettysburg, PA when this happened.... soo a good ~2 hours away from PSU.

I went to PSU as well for my undergrad in electrical engineering

Sorry to see this man. My friend hit a deer twice in one year in Frederick MD. Sucks.

All -

Any idea where I can find an OEM Euro front bumper? If possible I might try to have that put on the car rather than the US one if the cost is relatively equal.

Damn Deer

Glad to here no one was hurt and the damage to the car is only cosmetic.
Good call on waiting to take the M to a body shop you trust. There are way too many hacks out there.

I don't have a link to the euro bumper, but you can have the reflectors molded in. A good body shop will do it with a plastic epoxy compound that molds into and bonds with the existing plastic of the bumper, so no bondo or filler is used. I was hesitant at first but the body shop I trust assured me that the finished result would be flawless and the work would out live the car.

This ended up being on the best cosmetic modifications I have made to the car

Good luck with all the repair work

I kind of like the yellow reflectors (dimples!).

Everyone does the euro lenses on the e36 m3s so much that when I saw one that was stock, it looked really different. To a lesser extent, that's why I've left my yellow reflectors on my ///M sans decals.

Dang... how did I miss this thread.

So sorry to see the damage to your M, but it's great that it was minimal and you were OK.
Often these things cause HUGE damage.

On a lighter note...... You need to change the B on your plate to M

^+1

IIRC there was another forum member trying to score a Euro bumper, but I'm not sure if he succeeded or not. A good bodyshop will do it just as well though.

Glad you guys are approaching it with a sense of humor. The new front end looks like the Terminator with the exposed metal skull.

That's interesting.....
I was planning to go that route myself.
I had some tell me that plastic welding was the only way to go, so I chickened out.

I should have talked to you sooner, but at least I know now.
I definitely want to patch and blend the openings.
