oil temp seems a bit high?

I just got my oil changed and as I exited the bmw dealer's parking lot I noticed that the oil temp was at almost noon, when I've never seen it above 11 o'clock.

the temp outside is 73 and I did not drive above 3500rpms or so. And I assume the car had been off and cooling for the past half hour or so since that's how long I waited for the oil change.

In another thread most people say their needle stays around 11 oclock, maybe 190-200deg.
http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391683

Am I just being overly concerned? Does this oil need to "break in?"
Also the oil level on the dipstick is only midway between min and max, not at max.
Called dealer back and they said they used 10w60 (on paperwork too), but I am worried the wrong oil is in there which would cause higher than normal temps??

that's my point- this is just with normal driving, not track. normal driving shouldn't be this high...well, it wasn't ever before...

The needle on my oil temp gauge stays right around the same spot in normal driving conditions.

Mine's about 1/2 a needle width higher (11:59ish) during normal driving, with good air flow, but it's always hot here.
It gets up to 12:01ish in stop-and-go traffic.

I think you're fine.

Same here...seems normal to me. Mine have gone passed 12ish on hot summers stuck in traffic running the AC.

So the oil change special was the real deal?
Recall the other thread where we were questioning whether the seemingly bargain price applied to ///M models.

That's more realistic. Maybe slightly more than home brew, but they're getting a better price on the oil and filter.

Fine. After a heavy 30 minute track session in 30degC ambient mine will be reading around the 250F mark.

I was in the same boat as you and started freaking out on a hot day when the needle went past 12

That's about where mine stays when it's warmed up. Normal street driving in hot or cool weather.
