Thoughts on used Cams
I want to get the TS2+ kit from ESS but i dont want to pay 1200-1500 for the cams from them or schrick, to much $$$ for not a lot of gain (ess doesn't even offer them on their website for some reason). BUT there is a deal I found for zhp cams (248/248) and has 12k on it, that's not a lot of miles at all which is why I'm considering it, I understand you get what you pay for but 12k is practically brand new. Also I'd need to find a 268 exhaust cam (ess fi cams are 248/268)
When I had rebuilt my 1.8l motor in my 87 Cabriolet (my first car) we used a used G-grind cam with no issues BUT this is a much newer car/engine and I'm just wanting to keep cost down. Thoughts?

Cams do give a pretty large gain (20+ whp). There's a lot of discussion on the E46 forums, and you'll find a lot more info there rather than here since only a handful of people have FI Z4's.
Another option is a custom tune from a place like VAC. If you have access to a dyno, they can tune remotely. VAC also sells FI cams. Personally, if I went through the trouble of installing cams, I would avoid regrinds.

Cams are good for hundreds of thousand miles. I don't know anyone who has put new cams in a rebuilt race motor with 200,000 miles. Just look for wear before buying. Do not buy regrinds, buy the cams that you want.
