2013 Autocross Video Thread

There is no thread like this yet...so I'll start.

Headed out to PA today (SCR SCCA) and ran. Ended up #6/40 in the Tire Index Class....Given I had to go against the twins (FRS/BRZ) and my AS PAX (not to mention the minimal prep for RTR)...I did fairly well. Don't know final PAX numbers...but I should be hitting ~15-20 in PAX out of 100 or so cars.

Comments are appreciated.

Ah the squeal of Hawk pads...

Nice run, and glad to see I'm not the only one clapping when I see the time...

Yea, they are certainly ones that let you know you are braking...lol

Thanks, it was one of those runs that just worked. I couldn't touch that time again...in the PM the clouds showed up, and I don't think the tires got to optimal temperature....or I could just suck.

Watching other videos on the long straight in between the loops, going into the second loop I could of took the car out a lot wider to carry some speed, but I feel it is a give and take...who knows.

Ended up PAX #20/98, which isn't too bad. I really wish I could of hit the 41s.

I would of needed a 41.5 in order to take top in class (and 7th in PAX respectively) but I feel that was near impossible...the FRS/RX8/BRZ was too good on that course.

Bringing this sucker back from the dead!

Placed 1st in RTR and 4th in PAX Overall. Tires are at wear bars and they are still getting faster. I love RS3s

In addition, this was a special event for Militart Veterans. Check out the news video where my on-board footage was used

Another 1st in Class and 4th in PAX overall.

This car can be competitive at National events if I decide to do a full prep I think....

Today's course was a similar layout of the West Nationals Course. Very fast course.

1st in RTR and 23/115 in PAX

Best runs from each of my 4 events this year (first time doing autocross). I suck but I'm slowly getting less terrible!

Old thread, yes... but I'm looking forward to getting my 2nd season (and 1st full season) started in a couple months. Hopefully I will improve my car control enough to stop things like this happening thanks to my sloppy driving:

Great vids, and some really inspiring driving. After about 10 auto crosses in a mini cooper (non-s), I had finally started to turn in some decent times this year (around mid-pack with PAX, and 3rd in the more than 20 car novice group). Then I did an autocross in my new '06 Z4MC, and it was like starting from scratch. I had only had the car for 3 days so obviously far from familiar with it. Such a different animal than the Mini. On my final run, I started to manage the tail-happy power induced oversteer (mini would just plow with too much power). My times dropped as I got tighter to the cones, but I still find it very hard to gauge where the corners of the car are, sitting low and looking over that gigantic hood (tell me it get's easier). The tires (PSS) feel really low on grip compared to the RE11s on my Mini. I'm hoping a tire switch will be as big of an improvement as on the Mini, which resulted in about 1.5 second improvement over the V-12s that were on it previously.

You'll get better knowing where your car is. Although, it isn't going to as easy as your Mini cramming through bus stops and other tight transitions. When you attack cones, you'll find out that if you turn in with the same line like a Mini, you'll clip the cones with your rear tire. You gotta kinda go out more before you turn in to avoid this:

IMO, you gotta drive the Z4M like a Corvette. Set the car up to power on exit and REALLY give up on entrance.

IMO, go with Z2s if you're looking for new tires. The stiffer sidewall will help greatly with turn-in and response. You'll cook RE11s if you try and use those on the Z4M

Thanks, as Richard Hammond say "grab it by the scruff of the neck and treat it like the leary beast it is"

I have 19" wheels, so somewhat limited in sizes. Tire rack told me RE11s were the only choice out of the top AX street tires. I have the original 18 inters. I could run dedicated tires on those.

I went with BFGoodrich Rivals, which are supposed to be much better than RE-11s, but more forgiving of heat and slip angles/crossing the grip threshold vs. the Z2 at the expense of slightly less maximum grip.

Yet another tire not made in my size. I'm thinking of going back to 18"

After much deliberation, I ended up putting a set of Rivals on my OEM 18" wheels. We'll see how they do at tomorrow's AX.

Today, I did exactly as you suggested Kgolf31 with great results. Got the braking done before the corners, settled into a constant turning radius, and tried to modulate with the throttle. This felt really right, and I turned in some pretty good times (I think, we'll see when the results are posted). Only snafus were that I crunched 2nd gear 2 times, and my newly installed ZHP knob came off during one of the hosed shifts. But no fishtailing all over the place like last time, which is probably mostly due to putting proper tires on there.

intoflatlines, Thanks for suggesting the Rivals these are seriously good tires. They felt great at today's autocross. Lots-o-grip, and very predictable. I ran 38PSI hot on all corners.
