Ran over a rock on the highway
I was driving along on the highway traveling about 70 mph when all of a sudden I come upon what appeared to be a jagged edged football sized piece of concrete sticking up from the road. Unfortunately I was unable to avoid it in time and caught it with my right side rear tire. Today I had the chance to lift the car and get a closer look at it.
As you can see, the object took a good size chunk out of my inner sidewall and bent the edge of the rim slightly. Fortunately, the tire and rim are still maintaining a seal and I haven't noticed any drivability problems. Just to be safe I rotated my right side tires so that the damaged one is now on the front. My question is this: Is this damage something I must immediately repair at all costs? Does this pose a significant danger to the wellbeing of myself and my car? This is literally a brand new tire. I am planning on replacing the wheels and tires within the next 2-3 months, but I'm not quite ready to do it yet. What do you think? |

Are they run flats?
If it were me, I would not want it on the front. If you were in a turn and it went out - it could be ugly. Or trying to brake under speed with a flat front tire in any kind of a turn (or need to turn to avoid something while braking) could be bad. I would personally much prefer to have that flat on the back if it came. I certainly would not feel comfortable driving it like that, especially at 55-80 MPH. Maybe a local shop has a used one you can pop on there for 15-20 bucks to get you by?? Be safe man.

Not a run flat. I've had a bad experience with a tire going out in the rear; causes a fishtail spin. I do think that looking for a used replacement tire in good shape is probably my best bet. I will look for one.

I wouldn't drive with that.
You can file that with your insurance. It will be a collision claim, so you'll have to eat whatever collision deductible you have, but your rates won't rise as it wasn't your fault.* *If you have a really shitty car insurance company this might not be true, but big names like Geico will not raise your rates for this sort of thing. |

Replace it for your and others safety sake. That's dangerous.

i do not think the tire can be repaired, and i would not drive on it unless i wont be exceeding 25mph.
the wheel on the other hand can definitely be repaired, you will just have to find a shop that can do rims. |

Rim looks cracked to me in the first picture. And the tire is unsafe to be on the road, for any distance/speed.

Agreed on all the sentiment to replace it before you keep driving.
Also, if you have an accident with that tire like that, you will probably get blamed for it, even if it had nothing to do with the tire. Get it changed asap! -gc |

I can't see the pictures due to the network I'm on, but you are correct in swapping it from the rear to the front.
If you're not on aftermarket wheels already, now would be a good time to swap. I've found OEM wheels crack far too easily.
