Actually, that's not the best way to check the wiring. If you follow this approach and the wires are connected, you'll just rip them out.

To check the wiring, pop up the trim ring around the shift boot without removing the shifter. You can trace the wiring once the boot is lifted up.

If they won't replace it, and you want the OEM, let me know. I'd happily sell you mine.

I'm pretty sure the previous owner of the OPs car had swapped out knobs. The price of them new would be enough to make it worth swapping and reselling.

Good luck trying to get the dealership to warranty it. If they give you any run around then show them the pics on my DIY thread: http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77000

Those are pics of the OEM knob with the wiring etc.

I've been driving manuals for almost 20 years, so I definitely don't need the shift knob to be backlit. I was just trying to figure out if mine is defective or if it was some sort of running factory change (or mistake.)

The Service Advisor I talked to today wasn't too informed so I seriously doubt that I'll be getting a free replacement.

I'm thinking this is a good excuse to get the ZHP knob.

Update--no electrical connections at the knob. No indication that the dealership would replace the knob or fix the issue.

Looks like I'll be ordering a ZHP knob... who has the best price?

I don't know if this is true...but is the shift boot connected to the shift knob?

I've heard conflicting points to this. I want to get a ZHP knob but want to leave the boot

Definitely not attached. I replaced my lighted one with a zhp knob and am using the original boot.

I am more concerned about the lack of service on your car. The norm is an oil change at 1,200. I would definitely have that done asap. Also, your other fluids are over two years old (radiator and brake) so I would see of the dealer would change out as part of your free maintenance.
