out of storage oil change

So my car has been stored for 5 months and was wondering about the oil change. Should I start the car and let it warm up then change the oil or just change it before starting.
I was thinking that all the oil after 5 months should be totally drained to the bottom of the pan. What do u guys think??

You'll get a few different answers on this one.
Personally, I believe you also have contaminants on engine internals (condensation etc) as well as in the oil.
I don't like putting fresh oil in w/o driving out all the contaminants first.

I would at least drive it a bit to at least get the oil warmed up before you change it.

In the future you should be storing your car in the fall with fresh oil in the pan. Also, make sure you store it with a full tank of gas to avoid gas line/tank corrosion.

You did not mention if you changed the oil before you stored the car for 5 months? That would have been the correct storage procedure along with adding Sta-bil to a full tank of gas. If you did do that then you don't require another oil taking it our of service.

IIRC, I believe I saw a study that freezing temperatures break down the oil and it should be changed once winter is over. This is only if the storage area was not heated and the oil was exposed to sub 32F temperatures. Seeing that you live in Alberta I would assume(unless you have a heated garage) that the oil was cold and probably broke down. This is why I change mine after I remove for winter. A rich man probably could do both before and after. Not me

Ill look for the link. Cant find it. Maybe I dreamed it up. Anyway my car is usual down for 60-90 days. I start it up to full temp every 30 days so I dont worry to much about condensation and rust. Usually the oil only has 1500 -2000 miles on it at time of storage anyway.

This is probably for conventional oil and not synthetic. Also, if the car was stored in an insulated (not necessarily heated) garage, it will be fine.

Even though my car was in a heated garage...I'm still changing this weekend.

Puts peace in my mind knowing it's fresh oil...etc etc.

Man, you guys are killing me! Do you think all cars at the manufacturers, dealers park inside a heated garages at all times (how about those freshly containers of oil you are going to buy? Are they all stored in a control environment?)
Anyhow, do whatever help you sleep better at night. Oil change is pretty cheap.

its in a heated garage but ill just changed it when it comes out of storage. I personally think that the bmw oil is fine for winter storage and I never change my oil before storing her. I know I prob should but I drive less then 5000 km a season, how I envy u guys in a warmer climate

It'll be fine. New BMW's can sit for months in yards across the planet before making it to dealers.... At $15-$20 per litre and full synthetic with the latest additives, to swap it that often is pure waste...
