E85 owners question about nav

Looking to buy an E85 M but I don't think I want Navigation. Are non-nav cars easy to install a bluetooth receiver on? On nav cars, does the screen always have to be up for the radio, etc to work? Is there a way to remove the nav and have it be a storage cubby?

Thanks for any insight and I apologize if this has been discussed, I've tried searching.

Hi there!

I've got an E86 with the nav. There are buttons to open and close the screen. If you switch tracks while listening to music the screen opens back up. It's kind of annoying if you want the lid to stay closed.

As far as I know, there is currently no storage tray you can install to replace the existing nav screen. I've looked into this and while some have noticed parts from other BMW's that may fit, no one has confirmed anything yet.

Regarding bluetooth, many of us are running BlueBus units. In my opinion this is currently the best bluetooth solution. It installs just fine with nav-equipped Z's as well as non-nav Z's. On my car with the nav, I can access the BlueBus menu and music track titles will scroll. So there is still some use for my screen.

So to answer your question, you're gonna be fine either way.

I have an 07 with no navi. The car came with an auxiliary input straight from factory and I plugged in a Bluetooth receiver into it that runs off a battery that lasts about 12 hours. Works flawlessly and only cost me $30 !

The nav with an Intravee II/Apple interface is a pretty nice combo. It can even show coolant temp in real time as well max speed/temp/rpm & acceleration/deceleration in Gs as well as a ton of other stats on your last 17 trips (If someone else drives your car, you'll know their max rpm and speed, lol, or for yourself on a track day). There's also some additional extra features for the vehicle since it hangs on the ibus.

I use an iphone connected to the Intravee II to steam music which displays the artist/song name on the nav screen and the steering wheel controls work.

As for the GPS, sometimes I use it as my co-pilot to show me upcoming turns and their sharpness when carving unfamiliar roads since it's it's up high; therefore easy to see without being too distracting. Sure the GPS is dated and can't compare to modern tech, but it's convenient since it's built in.

You can update/modify the nav firmware to add night mode as well as a different splash screen (i.e. ///M logo or a pic of your actual car).

I'd concentrate on finding the best Z4 example and not rule one out because it has nav.
