OT: Carbon Fiber in Non-Automotive Applications
Carbon Fiber intakes, hoods, badges, etc are talked about a lot in this forum. I thought you might like to see how carbon fiber is used in other applications as well.
This is a Luis & Clark carbon fiber violin. The entire body, finger board, and peg box are made of laminated carbon fiber. Feel free to post your own non-automotive carbon fiber spottings. |

the carbon fiber violin jumped right out at me cos i've been playing the fiddle since four. i can't imagine the cf violin sounding any good as i'm sure the resonance properties of cf and aged, dry wood differ a great deal?
nonetheless, cool pic. why ain't anyone commenting on the format67 video i created a thread about? |

other than the automotive and aeronautical industries, one of the most interesting places to see how cf is used, look to the bicycle industry. They have carbon frames for road and mountain bikes, carbon wheels for road and mountain bikes, etc.

^interesting. i've always been under the impression tt the workmanship of the two pieces of wood - the face piece with the f-holes and the base piece - gives a specific violin it's aural characteristics. the exact position of the sound post and bass bar, together with the exact construction of the bridge, also affects sound. as violins age, the wood progressively dries out and this enhances the sound. even the lacquer used to varnish the wood affects the sound properties. there are just so many factors and hence my scepticism toward a cf violin. kudos cos it's different, and probably costs a fair bit

Carbon is still silly in automotive applications too. This is where it's meant to be used.
I got real handy working with composites on these projects. One of my fathers carbon toys, I call this one the carbon brick.
