Coupe hatch release

Small question...

When I hit the trunk release button on my remote the trunk unlatches and I can walk up to it and grab it by the bottom to lift it. But it got me wondering if my trunk shocks are meant to be strong enough to fully lift the thing un-assisted once it's been unlatched. Otherwise what's the damn benefit of the button on the key over just using the emblem release/handle if I need to walk to the car and open it manually anyways?

I'm thinking it's a BMW thing-- I don't get any different action from my E90 3-series.

This might be a physics thing, but if you look at the angle of the shock in relation to the hatch, when it's closed it's parallel to the hatch. Even if it has enough "rebound" to extend, it's exerting force on the same plane as the hatch and does not extend the force perpendicular to the plane of the hatch to push it "up."

On my dad's 545i, There's a spring action, 90º lever on the trunk so when you hit the trunk release, it pops up.

Good observation, never noticed that! Either way I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, hasn't really ever bothered me that it doesn't spring up and I don't think it will bother going forward either

Speaking about the funking trunk action on the coupe, Has anyone noticed the quirkiness of how the trunk can be open?

1. If the car is locked, you can't simply hit the button on the remote to unlock the trunk. Instead, you have to either:
a) use the key.
b) hit the unlock button to first unlock the driver's door, then you can NOW hit the button on the remote to unlock the trunk?

2. If you just simply unlock the driver's door, pulling the latch handle doesn't unlock the trunk. You'll have to use the remote button?

3. You can only use the latch handle to open the trunk if and only if both doors are unlocked?

#1 is because it's a hatch and you would be able to gain access to the otherwise locked car.
( cars with a trunk you can't )

Never noticed # 2 and 3 , can't think of a logical reason for that one.
I'm not sure if there's any coding options related to this. ( I haven't seen any)

I don't know...On my X5, which you can also gain access to the car through the hatch; I can use the remote to pop the trunk even if all the doors are locked - you can't do this on the Z4.

It's the button under the BMW symbol

The way you are describing this sounds like you have an aftermarket system? The fob is built into the key on the stock system. I don't have any of the problems that you are describing.

+1
Pressing the trunk unlock button on the remote unlocks my hatch. Something is not right with the OP car.

Maybe the coding, check if "TRUNK LID RELEASE ONLY POSSIBLE WHEN UNLOCKED" is "enabled"

You're mistaking my post with someone else I think, the hatch releases just fine with the remote. My question was more of did anyone's hatch release and pop all the way open on button press which it seems it does not... by design. So I'm all good

That's very possible. I'll need to look into this coding issue

Lol, you should try lifting that trunk without the struts… you'll soon know why they are there..

My bad, I meant XMetal.
BTW you can add the pop up type stops (like kind for the hood) that will pop the hatch further open when you unlock it, but it won't make it open all the way like some SUVs.

The Coupe trunk unlock button on the key is pointless; you have it correct.

Sorry I miss read, I thought it was the trunk release your were talking about, not the remote.

I agree with pungo, check your coding.
My remote works in all situations.
