HPS silicone intake elbow
Has anyone tried this on the e85/e86 z4m yet?
http://www.hps-siliconehoses.com/06-...-tube-red.html I know a few folks that tried to adapt the e46 ones with no place for the vacuum line. This one claims to be specific to the z4m. Did a search with no luck so wanted to see if anyone had tried this yet. Last edited by R0ME0; 04-15-2013 at 11:41 AM.. |

I honestly can't see how the OEM part is described as "restrictive" or how this part will make any significant performance gain. The air passing through this part has just passed through the most restrictive part in the air-intake system, namely, the MAF, and the internal area of the OEM part progressively increases the further away from the MAF as it joins the plenum.

I'm pretty sure the factory plastic piece is bent 90 degrees. It's also huge and wide open, so I'm not sure where the restriction comes in. The ID on both ends would have to be identical anyway for this thing to fit, otherwise you would need a wider MAF and manifold.
I've also purchased a very similar piece, made from the same material but admittedly smaller, for around $13 if my memory is working. |

Here are a few photos of the OEM part. As can be seen the inside is very smooth/polished I've run a stream of water over the corrugated section at the inlet end of the elbow to show any restriction that might occur. It appears to me that this has a tendency to spread a "boundary layer" onto the smooth section of the pipe rather than create eddy currents which might impede flow. The inlet orifice measures 85mm in diameter (Area 56.74sq cms) and the elbow is an increasing taper to the elliptical orifice which measures 110mm x 135mm (Area 116.71sq cms) which is double the size of the inlet. No restriction there. Last edited by exdos; 04-15-2013 at 04:01 AM.. |

Just heard back from HPS and it appears its the same part as the M3. I have showed them pics and they are working with their R&D Product department to see if they can get the vacuum port added.

Do you have any pics of your old setup before the Gruppe M? I picked up the HPS elbow and it didn't have enough give or play to work with the AFE
