Couldn't you use the child seat airbag defeat switch (activated with key inside the passenger door jamb) to avoid this problem? Seems like that overrides airbag deployment with an occupied seat, which is what we'd want when driving solo. Would need to be diligent and remember to enable it, however, when you do have a passenger...

Now, while DSC_OFF has verified that this gizmo does solve the airbag light issue, the other (important) question is do the airbags indeed deploy when they should? Would someone please install the simulator and then run their car into something so we know for sure?

I'll report back on that too, but hopefully not

Wow, that looks awesome! So I guess the bypass is a win. I'll get ahold of the seller and see if he can get me that one.

Those seats look incredible!

Woo hoo! The answers in this thread could not be more timely!

I have been talking with Dorifto this week about getting a set. In red. Should look good and otherwise snap up the black interior a bit (not to mention allowing me to drive around corners at the track without bracing against the door, transmission tunnel, or hanging on to the wheel while trying to actually drive).

Thank you for all the legwork!

Thanks Finn, to me it wasn't acceptable that every other chassis had a workaround for the airbag except ours. The fact our cars were made in between the e46 and e90 era makes it tough when it comes to programming / electronics but I'm just glad this worked (despite the highly effective alternative of electric tape covering any lights lol). I will say this though, no matter how many times you do an aftermarket seat install it never gets easy. Hardware options suck regardless of manufacturer. Always have a burr set handy, drilling should be expected.

The seats look great. Speaking of the installation, what kind of mounts did you use? Did you use adjustable plates like VAC makes? Do you have sliders? Thanks.

Thanks bud... For MY install, I used Macht Schnell floor mounts (E46) & receptacle spacer, Recaro UNIVERSAL side mount & sliders

I emphasize MY install because as you know, every seat is different. My advice to you is go to a local race shop and find the seat you like best. See if others have installed it (Z4 or E46) and if so, find what hardware they went with.

If you're tall enough to get away without using a slider, I highly recommend looking into these. I think MS floor mount + receptacle + this side mount will make your install 10x easier than mine.

Functional and looks great also, the ideal combination. Are you going to write up a DIY thread, I'm sure there are others who are interested in doing this. How much of a weight savings did you achieve?

I actually found the EAS YouTube DIY to be the most helpful but truth is different seats will have different procedures although the basic process remains the same. However I can add some tidbits I found helpful for my particular install.

My module will not only remove the airbag light (like some other sellers on eBay) but will also ensure that the on-board computer recognizes that a passenger is present in the passenger seat and seat is OCCUPIED. So with my module installed, ALL AIRBAGS WILL WORK PROPERLY AND DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT.

Worst case I'll send this back if it doesn't work but $60 seems like a worthwhile gamble. Will report back in a few weeks.
So this module that you link to is the one you're using? Still working OK?

Whoa sir your thread just made my day! I wish I read this thread earlier. Just installed a pair of Recaro CS racing seats, and the warning light drives me crazy!

I have two questions if you please

1. When buying a occupancy sensor emulator, does it matter weather the car is an euro spec or american spec?

2. Do i need to buy 2 emulators for both seats? Or just the passenger seat will do?

Thanks!
Bill

1. Doubt it as I'm pretty sure the part numbers for the occupancy sensor for both US-spec and Euro cars are same but you should check realoem to be sure.

2. Nope, only need one for passenger side.

Thanks for the fast response. I got a bit confused, cause I was looking at this website that selling a (pretty pricey) OC3 emulator, and it specific states for "US models only": http://www.europeanautosource.com/in...on-module.html

I realize some other ebay sellers have such statement too, and I have no idea what kind of specs Australian Vehicles are. lol Anyway, I have emailed couple of sellers including the one you suggested previously. Hope everything will work out soon!

OC3 emulators are for newer model BMW's, doesn't apply to E85/86.

Go to www.realoem.com, enter last 7 of your VIN and look up the part number for your occupancy sensor. Then look up a generic US model equivalent and see if the part number matches.

Good idea, I'll check it later when I'm home. Also I ordered the occupancy emulator from the ebay seller already, hopefully will have it by next monday or so.

Great write up. I'm getting ready to complete my seat install too. What size torx screw is the seatbelt buckle fastened in with? None of mine seem to fit so will prob have to go out to buy a set.
