I just took delivery of my 2007 M coupe (see my garage) last Monday! I've put just about 90 miles on it in the last week (I want to keep it low miles per year, but I think I'm going to be driving it a lot during this "honeymoon" phase!).

Big firsts for me, and I'm pretty sure I did it right: this is my first
Bimmer and my first car of any real level of performance. Fittingly, this is my very first post on ZPost as well!

I'm looking forward to "refreshing" her. Has 60K miles, very good condition. Front rotors have large groove, but hardly any shudder (new pads). I have new OEM rotors and Hawk HPS 5.0 pads ready to install, but thinking I might just use the current setup until the pads wear down. Any reason that would be bad? I am not pushing too hard, just getting to know the car--and there's plenty of performance under the limit that I am enjoying for the time being!

Other things some experts who have inspected my car said I should keep an eye on (although not urgent now): Guibo flex disc, power steering pump (very slight whine), possibly replace all bushings, change out diff and transmission fluid to red line, bleed brakes.

Of course, mods are fun and I've already got some ideas (suspension, exhaust), but that will be down the road. I'm not looking to track; mainly to enhance road performance.

In general I'm really starting from scratch as a gear head and have a ton to learn: I am quite adept at the wheel--done some recreational competition in cars and karts and have fared above average with no regular training. But I have a lot to learn, mechanically. My dad is flying in to town next week for this "milestone" experience in my life and we're going to start getting my garage set up--I'm starting from scratch, so need all the basics: tools, jack, stands, etc. Any suggestions??

I'm not looking to be hasty, and am glad to do my research/study. Do any of you have advice about where and how I can get a proper education online, but in a more structured way, as opposed to just doing google searches and scouring the internet for random videos and blogs on each separate topic that comes to my mind?

Thanks, all. Great to be part of the Bimmer world, and the particularly special M club!

BB
Welcome to the forum, BB. For the tools, there are different thoughts, but I've bought quite a few from Harbor Freight, mostly in their Pro line, and have found them to be excellent. I also have some old Craftsmen tools, and the quality is just as good (as far as I can tell). If I was a pro mechanic, maybe I'd have better, but for how often I use them, the HF tools work great (I'm talking about sockets, ratchets, breaker bars, wrenches, etc). Also, it's hard to beat price/performance of the Harbor Freight 3-ton, low profile jack. It's heavy as lead, but it's stout. I like stout over light in a jack. When you're looking at jack stands, you can use the ones with the standard Y shaped beam, but those that have the flat tops can be used with the rubber or metal inserts that go into the jack points on BMWs. Plus, check this out:

http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showt...ce-on-your-car!!!

When bleeding your brakes, don't forget to also bleed the clutch. It uses the same brake fluid. I just purchased a Motive pressure bleeder, and I really like it.

Congrats on your Z4M coupe!

Just picked up this 07 3.0si, had many BMW years ago, 533i, 528i, 2002, 635csi, but been a way for a while, looking forwards to eventually making a few mods

Nice! I've been thinking about picking up another N52 engined car. They are great drivers and easy on the wallet.

Welcome to the forum, Boca. Looks like you found a nice clean Z4. It's a shame we can't see the best aftermarket part you have on the car...in pink.

Welcome to the site! It's pretty helpful. Watch out for the OT section though, it can get bumpy.

Someone left an N52 on your doorstep? ;-) Try posting in the for sale / wtb section, you'll probably get more eyeballs.

Hi all and greetings from the UK! Just joined but have been a z4m owner for almost two years now and a BMW owner for 6+ years.

It took me just shy of a year to find a good example. I finally settled on a 2006 42k miles Interlagos blue Z4MC with only one owner from new.

My previous car was a Imola Red E46 320Ci. Absolutely lovely car with great handling but the Z4M is simply put on a whole different level. It just puts a smile on my face every time I drive it

I have started some spring/summer prep replacing the engine oil and filter. Next up is the brake oil and sourcing a stubby.

Nice car!! Too bad you could not have kept both machines - they would have made a Super pair.

Hi and greetings from Belgium!
I've joined this forum some time ago but never posted anything. I wanted to change that! (I'm mostly active on a local BMW forum called Bimmerboard) I've been driving a Z4 Coupé 3.0si for almost 2 years now as a daily driver (previous car was an E91 320d).
I try to do a lot of work on the car myself as a hobby. Although some thing get taken care of by my great local BMW specialist/indy as I don't have a lift.
I don't have too many plans for the car (already have a KW suspension and aftermarket exhaust on it. Engine mods are, unfortunately, illegal here so that's not an option). As for interior mods I've added a ZHP gear knob and did an invisible Dension gateway install for my iPhone (got sick of using CDs..).

There are just a few minor issues I need to take care of (and I'll probably be posting about them in the next days!). My goal is mostly to make her as new again!

I've attached a picture of my car on the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße in Austria.

Jerry, how did you survive 5 years without Zpost? Welcome to the forum. Lots of great folks here and a wealth of knowledge.

Just-right, welcome to the forum. When I saw the photo of your Imola Red E46 with the M-tech parts and wheels, I thought you had a 330Ci ZHP. I just bought a black 330Ci ZHP for my son as a project car, and we've been having fun restoring it and getting all of the standard maintenance done. That would have been cool to be able to keep the red and blue cars. Nice combo. Glad you are enjoying the Z coupe.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I thoroughly enjoyed the E46. It is a great car. Imola Red is one of the best colours, even after 12 years it was still looking superb. I managed to get my hands on a brand new discontinued BMW performance airbox to let it sing a bit more. It will make for a great project car, no doubt! Keep a good eye on rear subframe corrosion and oil consumption.
