5w-30 BMW Synthetic in M Roadster

I just picked up the car from the dealership after a "Low Mileage Oil Service" @ 8000 miles on the clock because my last "Break-in" Service @ 1200 miles was over a year ago.

However, in the service invoice, it says they have used 8 QTY of 07-51-0-017-866 5w-30 Synthetic oil in the car and it's covered under warranty. As I remember, M engines are suppose to take Castrol 10w-60 (part no. 07-51-0-009-420). I looked up my 1200 miles service invoice from a year ago at a different dealership, and they did use the 10w-60 oil.

Am I missing something here, or is my concern valid?

Thanks!

I think the only reason 10-60 is recommended is if the engine is going to be raced, since the 60 weight will help with higher temps.
5-30 is thinner and will get upto temp faster and be less suited to constant high temp situations and u will have to change the oil more often.
It wont break ur engine, but depending on how u drive it may be less ideal for you.

You're dealing with an incompetent dealer. BMW NA emphatically recommends Castrol TWS 10W-60 oil for the S54 engine; read the label on the radiator cover.
You might also want to check the oil level to see if they over-filled the crankcase. The S54 engine takes 5.5 liters; no more, no less. Again read the radiator cover label for oil level instructions.
No immediate harm done, but I'd climb the dealer's tree over this faux pax. I'd insist on an immediate oil and filter change as well as annotating the records that the wrong oil was installed in the event of any future engine lubrication related warranty claims.
I'd also find another dealer to do my maintenance and warranty work. Or better yet do it yourself.

Holy freaking hell, where did you pull that out of? The reason BMW only recommends 10W-60 is because if you don't use it, you can expect to have serious issues. It has nothing to do with racing.

Dude, like jmillet said climb up the dealer's ass on this one, and make sure you give BMW NA a heads up on their incompetent asses.

I see that you're in MA, what dealer was this, so I can make sure I have nothing to do with them...oh please God tell me it was Herb.

Yes. It was Herb Chambers!
Unfortunately, it was the closest one for me.

Thanks for the all responses. I will give them a call tomorrow and report back!

Take it back. The motor requires 10w-60 only.

After the horror stories I got from one of my buddies, I decided that even though I live in Boston, I'd never ever go there. Good luck.

"10...10... 10...

W... W... W...

60... 60... 60..."

I think he gets the picture, no?

Well, I do my own oil changes and I prefer Amsoil 20W60.

Let's not confuse the issue here.
The OP has a S54 3.2L powered Z4 M Roadster not a 3.0L powered Z4. Your Z4 3.0 came from the factory loaded with BMW's Castrol 5W-30 synthetic and your Owner's Manual indicates "Approved oils belong to the 5W-40 and 5W-30 classes".

wow do you people really not know how viscosity is related to heat?

I said racing because under "race" conditions the engine will be running pretty hot so you need something like 60 weight oil to handle that extreme heat. As the heat increases the oil thins out, having 30 weight oil will thin out more at 100degress C than 60 weight will at the same temperature.

So where am i pulling shit from? Maybe you should read up on how oils actually work.

You're spreading some bad mojo man. If you want to put 5W-30 in your M fine, but I'll be the guy doing this-> when your car breaks down.
