Just installed my RPI Exhaust!!

First impressions....HOLY SH@^%@%@TTTT!!! That's fricken loud!!!
2nd impression....One of the best sounding exhausts on the market! None of the youtube videos do this exhaust any justice! I can't help but pound the throttle any chance I get.
Now as for the loud part, yes it's pretty darn loud inside the cabin. I found myself having a nice headache upon arrivinghome. Is there anything anyone has used to insulate the trunk in order to lessen the noise?

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

PS: Thanks whitejdm, although my head is pounding and I think Im partially deaf now, I fricken luv this thing!!

Read crfine88's mod journal in the general section he used some dynamat type insulation he found at his local fry's in the trunk to combat noise, not sure of the brand. I'm also receiving some dynamat xtreme soon I'll be using incrementally until I'm happy with the cabin volume. I'm just gonna start with the area under the floor between the battery and taillights - if that's not enough I'll apply more

I dove my friend's Z4MC with RPI for 30 minutes and I gave me a headache so I dont know how you guys could deal with day in day out. I have Supersprint Race and X-pipe. The setup is loud enough for me (at WOT). I also lined the trunk with Dynamat Extreme and it seems to help but mostly reduce vibration and dampening inside noise. It wont block exhaust noise.......

FWIW I don't have an RPI exhaust, but mine's just as loud. I'm glad to hear that it absorbs vibrations as ever since installing it, my Nav screen especially will rattle from time to time, as a few other bits I haven't pinpointed. As most of my driving is relatively short trips, I don't mind the exhaust, and when I'm taking a longer overnight trip, the trunk is filled with a duffel bag of clothes, jackets, and other random shit, which really helps absorb the noise when I want it the least - cruising for a long period of time. Anyway I'll post my impressions later tonight or tomorrow

Bunch of girls up in this thread

I have the OEM carpet mat in the back along with a towel and its nowhere near headache inducing levels. That said, BTM's exhaust is louder than my RPI's so I guess I could see the need for sound proofing (if I had sensitive and dainty ears.)

So did you line the trunk above the carpet or below? And how much of this Dynamat extreme did you need to buy? Any pics? Thx

LOL...after a few hours cruising at 80 and 3k rpm...I decided I could never live without a stereo in my car. Imagine our cars with headers

Something I never thought of before, but really does make a difference is what is in your trunk. A friend and I drove to an autox about 1 hr, with a cooler in back, I just sat it on the floor. It's like the thing actually amplified the sound - the drone was the loudest I've ever heard it. For the ride back, I laid a jacket across the floor and set the cooler on that, and it was much better

^& that is why products like Dynamatt help.
It absorbes energy & stops the body panels from doing the same thing that you experienced with the cooler.

I've got that extra trunk mat that I would be happy to give you if you want it. It doesn’t add any Horse Power like stickers do though...and you would have to pick it up as my lazy ass isn’t going to take the time to ship it.

If the dynamat doesn't do the trick I'll definitely take it

Glad you like the sound Costa! Yeah after 2 weeks I dynamatted the heck out of my trunk with two layers and it made a WORLD of difference. Even my girlfriend commented on it asking "did you change your exhaust again?".

Yes, the dynamat applied to the trunk sheet metals/panels. There are some diy showing how to remove the carpets and inside moldings. It was very easy to do. I think i used about 40sq.ft. I got them from onlinecarstereo.com, they were the cheapest i could find. Just got about 40sqft of any combo since it is ok to cut these to fit (dont forget to do the wheel wells and rear section al well). Sorry i dont have any picture (cant even tell once you put the carpet and panels back on).

UPS delivers and 1 layer of this stuff and the car is much better. I only applied where you see in the pic - none around the sides or anything. I've had my trunk apart numerous times but it's really simple to get to the areas I did. Nav rattle is gone, it's still loud but much better cruising on the highway. Apparently this is one of the higher end dynamat products...so as far as the material you use goes it may be a case of "you get what you pay for"

Also, I was careful not to cover up this wire. Just slit the material (utility knife to cut it) and the wire is routed over the matting.

i used 1 layer of dynamat extreme in the same exact places btm applied to (far easier as i did not have to remove any of the secured trunk panels) and 1 layer of ensolite on top of that (helps reduce the overall volume). the dynamat actually improved the tone of the rpi's as it removed all the low frequency heavy drone and correspondingly brought out a lot more of the higher-pitched awesomeness tt the rpis sound so so good in.

I should mention I don't have RPI but just a loud exhaust. It's no secondary cats to BMS xpipe to Magnaflows. A local guy (prodigal_m) has RPI with no xpipe, and mine is a little louder so I figured I could contribute. As for how the tone of the RPI cans changes or anything specific to that, I can't comment.

I was thinking of adding a layer of ensolite as well but havent got any free time to get it done. By the way, there are 4 screws holding the back panel in place (and the light covers). Very easy to get them off and put some in there.I believe it will help to reduce more noise since this area is right on top of the muflers' tips

^Interesting thought. That rear piece is really easy to take off.

FWIW, the process to access the floor only (what I covered in the pics above) is

1) Remove battery cover
2) Remove each taillight cover by turning the thing, they just pop out
3) Remove 4 screws to remove center plastic piece
4) Take out "lower" carpetboard (it's possible to get this out without taking out the rear plastic parts, but I tucked the dynamat underneath the side carpeting and removing these pieces makes it much easier and literally takes 2 minutes)
5) Remove interior plug sitting vertically on the driver's side for the carpet on the "upper" part of the trunk to pull back that carpeting (don't need to fully remove)

To get to these pieces takes only a few minutes. Like I said I've had the entire trunk out before, and to get around the sides is a little more involved, and since behind those pieces surround your rear shock towers is foam from the factory anyway, I'm not sure how much benefit you'd get from getting it in there.

in my experience, the layer of dynamat simply over the main floor of the trunk helped significantly reduce the intensity of the drone. the layer of ensolite really didn't noticeably reduce the volume by much (maybe 5% at best) and is probably not necessary. if u do feel inclined to add dynamat over the sides of the trunk directly over the mufflers, i think it will only benefit more.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions gents...I am going to try the dynamat out next week. Vinny, that bump in we had a few weeks back played a big part in me deciding to get the RPI...I had never heard it in person, and as soon as you reved up the engine, I was sold!!
PS: I can say that after a few days, it does not sound as loud in the cabin as it did. Maybe because I'm partially deaf now, lol, or maybe because I had the stock exhausts in the trunk, and that was causing more noise and vibrations. All in all, I am very very happy with the RPI's, and an instant smirk goes on my face when on throttle!!

ive had mine for around a month or so now and the longer you own the RPIs the better it gets. you learn how to avoid the loud areas and also get used to it. there really is nothing quite like the sound the RPIs provide, except for maybe the DKF system
