It should pass if the cats are working properly in section 02 (Spipe) But is California x-x might be risky. However, this M comes already with the best Section 2 out-there (hard to find too) and probably the only proper one for the state of California, other ones most likely would not pass for sho.

Cats are working properly, as if it was a factory installation. No CEL and recently passed Smog in WA state, with the OBDII plug. I will investigate but I don't see why it wouldn't.

Bump for a very nice coupe. This is a better bargain that what it may first seem. With the vanos and bearings addressed, this baby is good to go. It also has custom wheels, the additional aero side skirts, and the weighted shift knob. Add up the vanos and bearing work if done in a shop and the custom parts, and that's $7000-8000 value. You may find a less expensive coupe with 25K+ more miles, but it probably still has the original vanos and bearings, and everyone that owns these will eventually have to do vanos and bearings work. These are the major ticket maintenance items for the S54 engine, and it's already done on this car.

^WHS.

At 10 years old, these cars are going to NEED some maintenance. I'm starting to find a lot of plastic parts disintegrating and hoses failing. A well cared for car is worth its weight in GOLD.

Back when the E30 M3s were starting to climb in value (in the early 2000s), the rule of thumb was, you find an E30 M3, and you'll end up paying $15,000 for it one way or another. You can either come across a pristine one with very few things needing repairs, that will command $15,000. Or you can find a nice example but a little up in miles and some wear and tear for $12,000, and you'll end up putting $3,000 into it to fix it up for the next few years. Or you can find a raggedy, $7,000 example with 100,000+ miles, and spend another $8,000 to make it road and collection worthy. There's just no two ways about it.

I can list my MZ4 Coupe for sale if I should desire, and I think it will fetch $28K easy. But, even with all the work I've done on it, it still rides on the factory bearings and factory VANOS. Given the track miles it will likely need new RTABs and some of the suspension bushings (diff, rear lower control arm), and eventually engine mounts and tranny mounts as well. That's $4,000-6,000 worth of work for a $28K car. Unless it's not the color combo you want, you're much better off paying for a car that has all the work done for it and paying more.

The reason I'm holding off on some of the major maintenance upgrade, is I don't plan on selling the car. The bearings will be taken care of when lead numbers creep up. The VANOS is not a preventative maintenance in my book. The bushings are still in OK shape, although I will likely start tearing the back end apart next year to start replacing them. The engine and tranny mounts will be replaced as they fail.

Shockingly the steering hoses are in great shape, most of the coolant lines are in good shape. Eventually they will all need to be replaced on a preventative schedule.

Hack, the reason I consider VANOS preventative is because of the exhaust tabs breaking off, the seals deteriorating, and the sprocket bolts backing out on early models.

My intake sprocket was knocking around loose as a goose with bolts about to part like the Red Sea.

Last time I did the valve adjustment my mechanic upgraded the bolts and properly tightened it. So preventative or not, it's something you should take a look at every time the valve is adjusted, I suppose.

I was told that there really is no real "solution" to the VANOS tab issue, that even the fancy Dr VANOS "upgrade" is no guarantee that the tabs won't fail, and it is definitely one of those "keep a close eye" but replace when it breaks type when I suggested it to my mechanic.

Everyone has their different level of tolerances to risks I suppose.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It really did get whatever was needed to make it bulletproof.

Absolutely gorgeous car.

I am impressed with how lucid you seem in your posts because you must be totally off your rocker to be selling this beauty.

Well that's due to the medication....and the whiskey.

I cant believe it myself. But it is time, I need a motor the whole family can enjoy and perhaps it is time for something different.

Hack, the new owner (assuming sale goes through) has already posted on the forum. Glad that the car will still be part of the community.
