Car died at stoplight today
It happened this morning on my way to work. I commute 30 miles each way on the freeway and maybe 2 miles off the freeway. Today I took my exit and was waiting at the first stop since getting off the fwy. In the past the car has stuttered a bit before, ever since I got the RPI air filter, but today it stuttered and died
Is this anything I should be worried about or can it be attributed to the air filter? The car runs fine otherwise, hot or cold. Thanks!

How many miles have you put on the filter? After removing the charcoal filter on mine, it would sputter a little, especially on and shortly after start up, but it eventually "learned" it (maybe 3-4 days tops, if memory serves)

Is it an oiled filter? If so sometimes some of the oil gets on the MAF sensor. Try cleaning it with MAF sensor cleaner. Even if that isn't the problem the MAF can use a cleaning from time to time.

this happened to me all the time, my car would fluctate engine rpms at stop lights like it would die, and sometimes it has died. I have the rpi scoop and had a k&n filter. I cleaned the filter and maf once and it still did it after. I cleaned the maf again and it still did it... i put the stock filter in and it hasn't died but on rare occasions it will dip a little in rpms at idle. i think its the rpi intake scoop. I have had the rpi for about 20,000 miles and this above is over the course of 20,000 miles.. Its been 5000 miles with the stock back in. noticed no difference in car stock vs k&n and personally dont like cleaning and oil. Throwing away and replacing is much easier and less maintainence.

I can't see that as a cause.

my thoughts is the ecu is trying to adjust to the added air flow of the rpi scoop and when it comes from moving to a stop, the ecu is trying to adjust from the added airflow to now the change in airflow. Due to the design of the rpi scoop the added airflow is what i imagine to be a considerable amount more compared to the shape of stock. Everytime the car has died on me it is right when i came to a stop or about a stop in neutral or clutch depressed. The car came from moving though.

Hard to say for sure.....
I had an RPI scoop on my M roadster. I never had a problem like this & don't recall any one else.

Mine has coming close to dying on a couple of occasions, especially after a spirited highway run and then getting on the off-ramp and coming to a red light. It's probably been 3-4 times since I installed the AFE intake, but never really associated the two. I had initially assumed crappy gas, but had recently been wondering if it couldn't be a fault TPS getting confused after coming from full throttle to dead stop since the RPM's fluctuate so wildly.
I've also had it happen 2-3 times in the morning from a cold start as well. |

It's happened to me once and my airbox is completely stock. I get the engine idle dip occasionally when im sitting at a light but have only had it actually stall one time.

whoa...this happened to me a few times and I have a stock airbox
a few things i did notice though were it would only happen after some spirited driving, have less than 80 miles left in the tank, and I was playin bass heavy music I always seemed to think I had some electrical problem .....now I just anticipate it about to die and ready my foot to rev it back to life before I look dumb stalling at a light |

You're probably right, I was just thinking along the lines of potential causes based on most saying it happens after spirited driving/engine warmed up ..... leading me to think exhaust rather than intake or spark
I remember reading somewhere on the forum that O2 sensors can start going bad without throwing a warning light; not sure the tolerance to throw a code though heck, could even be the fuel pump/sending unit, but not sure why it would only be after warmed up anyways, it was just a thought |

Since these threads come up often (car stalls or idle is irregular after spirited driving), see Worried, bad spark..., stalling, engine stalls. I decided to resurrect this thread.
Has anyone run into this problem WITH an aftermarket tune? I was thinking about this today and the root cause could just be a bug in the stock tune.
