‘20 X6 as tow car for my Z4M Coupe

We’re close to buying a new 2020 X6 as a family car and tow vehicle for my 2006 Z4M Coupe to HPDE events. I’m looking for any input on the X6 for this purpose and any BMW client advisor referrals for a Performance Center Delivery order within the next week.

I know this is only peripherally related to Z4s, but I trust the advice here more than the X6 forum. Plus, that place is very quiet.

My wife also loves the Land Rover Velar, but we ultimately eliminated that based on Land Rover reliability problems. Having said that, the current X6 has an expected reliability score of 1/5 from Consumer Reports, which isn’t the most comforting.

Thoughts and opinions welcome. Thanks!

I have a older gen X6 and really enjoy it - it's something different on the road, but with the design/looks you either love it or hate it. When they first came out I thought it was by far the dumbest thing on the road, but I have grown to appreciate the unique design over the years.

If you get either new engine you will be very please. the B58 6cyl is a fantastic engine and will move the X6 without any problem. Transmission is VERY fast and one of the best I have ever driven. They got this powertrain down nicely.

I don’t know if this is the same for the X6 as well, but on the X7 if you opt for the tow package you also lose the “kick to open” hatch release feature. Sounds dumb but that was important to my wife.

Also spend some time on leasehackr if you haven’t already. BMW is well represented there, I recall seeing killer deals (13% below msrp before incentives) a few weeks ago before New Years. Probably not as good right now, but maybe there’s still something out there.

I bought an X3M40i. Its as big as the X5 used to be. Power and tranny are beyond superb. Tow hitch available for first time.

What trailer are you looking to use for the Z4? X3 hardly seems up to the task with a 4400lb tow rating

THIS.

I have a friend who used to tow his Z3 Coupe race car with his X5, gave up after a season because it just wasn’t a halfway decent tow vehicle. Even though his race car and trailer weight was below the rated weight for the X5, he said he had to replace blown shocks twice in one season on the X5.

Probably better to just get a truck that’s designed to tow rather than any of the BMW SUV/CUVs IMO.
