ContiSportContact 5 SSR

I've been running ContiSportContact 5 SSR for a couple of years now out of self preservation, since it's my DD and I'm routinely out in the middle of the Mojave in the middle of the night.

Got my first flat last night, left rear. Ran over a chunk of metal or something that tore a chunk out.

Not sure sure about the SSR aspect. Didn't notice when I hit whatever, roads are too bumpy to tell, it was night, with intermittent rain.
Even on the wet slippery roads I could tell immediately when the air came out. Back end got pretty swimmy.

Luckily I was only about a mile away from home. I'm not convinced it would have stayed on the rim for another mile.

Run flat? Not so sure. Of course, I bought 2 more, because I don't have a better idea.

Are you running stock wheels/sizes? How's the ride and handling compared to non-run flat? I've been tossing around the idea of going run flat as well for the same reason - mainly for road trips

They'll stay on the rim and keep the rim off the road but that's about it. The 50 mph max speed is more about keeping the car under control with no air in one of them than it is the tire. We've got them on the wife's E88 for the same reason you're running them. Getting her home if she runs over something ...........again.
They ride rougher than non-runflats and they don't handle as well, but their main purpose is getting you home.

They're not quite buttered eels, but they don't grip near as well as PSS.
Ride is a bit harsh, as well. You feel every little crack and pebble.
Stock ///M wheels and sizes.

I want to believe it would stay on the rim.
Backed it off the driveway and pulled it into the garage today.
That sucker was squeaking and squirming all over the place at 2 mph.

Wife drove the E88 for two weeks with zero pressure in the right rear tire before she mentioned the warning light was on. Car had a front tire that would lose about 3 psi in two months and turn on the yellow low pressure warning so she figured the red meant it was just a bit lower and kept forgetting to mention it to me. Right rear had a chunk taken out right at the edge of the outer shoulder. After the two weeks no signs of the rim every having contacted the road fortunately.

Wow, pretty good.
A guy I work with had a 2006 330i and when he brought it in for new tires the tire guy told him he had apparently been driving on a flat for a while. He never even got a light.
Not sure what brand they were, but my fear has been that I'd be driving on a flat and not know it.

The Conti's are definitely better after they've worn in. Just got the new ones mounted and took a spin around the block.
Rides like the Flintstone's-mobile.

'06 would have been ABS based, meaning trigger is the difference in diameters based on ABS sensor reading, not a physical tire pressure sensor. On SUPER stiff R-Comps, once I drove after getting a puncture, and the "low pressure" light didn't even come on until I pulled completely over off the freeway, and called for a AAA flat bed. and I had known that there's a puncture with likely zero pressure for about a mile.

99.95% of the populace has no idea what the "low pressure" or "zero pressure" indicator on the dash means. I used to get the phone call from my wife that says there's a sign that looks like a butt on the dash when the weather turns cold. Usually takes me a few minutes to register that it's the tire with an exclamation mark.

At least she notices it coming on. The other day I stopped some guy driving in the parking lot, and had to tell him he's got a fully deflated tire. He's got this puzzled look on his face like he had no idea...He must have been driving on that fully deflated tire for quite a while too. Zero clue. Are you meaning to tell me, that you have no idea what that noise the car's making as the rim is nearly scraping on the road?

Sigh.
