If you have SMG, then changing rear-differential is out of the question then. The Z4's SMG transmission module and ECU do not learn and adapt to different rear-end ratios like the E46 M3's SMG2.

What's gonna happen is every time you shift, there's a slight hesitation before the gear actually engages as the computer's confused, and every time you downshift, there's an even longer hesitation (about 2 seconds) and the engine will not rev-match. I put a 3.46 on my '04 3.0i SMG, and took it out 3 days later. And for some reason when I put the stock 3.07 back on the car, every time I shifted, the rear differential started making loud clunking noises. The acceleration did feel awesome with the 3.46 though.

And no one in the world has made a transmission software for the Z4 SMG with different gear ratios. Dinan was the only company that even attempted it, but gave up on the project a few months later.

obviously you have never driven an M.
its not all about the performance, its about the fun factor. and there giving the M's away for 45-50k. why waste time on a car where you would spend the ful amount when you can get a car 3 times better 15k off the sticker

Ouch, I guess my Y-chromosome count must be low or something. Folks called my last car (non-turbo MR2) a chick car too. Or maybe it's just knowing that the last time I drove a real firebreather on the street I got 7 tickets in one year, went backwards off a cliff and just generally had a bit too much fun for my own good....

OK, I may be trying a bit too hard to rationalize my decision to go non-M non-Sport for a daily driver, but I've been down the road of too much is never enough before, and that way lies madness.

I am also leaving a little power behind for this car as i am used to 360 horse and about 440 torque. I am looking for something smaller but not to small as i am 6 foot 4 and 275 pounds.
As far as the vette is concerned i would never waste my time on a chevy anything. There are some really good deals on 06 3.0 in my area this seems to be a good compromise between performance and fuel mileage.

Great info and I'm glad to hear your first hand experience. I thought this was just going to be another smg bash.

Sad to hear tho. Did these resulting problems lead to you decide to trade in the car for your current one?
