How Far Did You Travel to Buy Your ///M?
My search for an M Coupe was temporarily delayed beginning last Friday by a case of the "genuine" Swine Flu, but I seem to not be dead, and am trying to get up the nerve to place a few offers; my doctor says I should be ready to travel by the end of this coming week or the beginning of the next. The main obstacles are that I still love my ZHP (but I've had it for five years now), but especially the distance I will have to travel to check the car out and bring it home. Normally, a 1000 mile road trip wouldn't put me out at all, but this illness has really been extraordinary. And who the hell gets the flu in June anyway?
I'm looking at over 1,000 miles for the cars I'm mainly interested in, and of course none are located near airports that have non stop flight service from DFW. My question is: How far did those of you who had to travel to find the right ///M Car have to go to get just the right one? |

Mine was 1005 miles one way. Was looking for months. There are no cars advertised anywhere close to me-nearest 700 to 800 miles away.
Traveled by Plane, train then automobile. Picked it up outside of Philly and drove back to Nova Scotia. Don't let distance be the obstacle. Do your homework and find the right one for you. Hope you're fine after that nasty swine flu. |

~2000 Miles away. Live in Boulder Colorado...Found the car in The Hamptons NY at a BMW dealer there. car was 2 years old with 50 miles on it and not titled...Negotiation was a 6 month process...Waiting however for them to meet my price for the exact car I wanted was worth the wait.

I looked for about three months and then bought mine about 850 miles away. Some truck their new cars home but I drove mine- through WV, VA, NC mtns.
I am currently looking for a Z3 and expect it to take even longer and will travel up to 1000 miles, hopefully all twisties. |

Wow...and I thought I traveled far to get mine. I live in Tampa, FL and managed to find an Imola/Imola 06 M Roadster with only 2,400 miles on it and with the premium package in Jacksonville, FL, about 200 miles away.
But I'd say the longest I've driven for a car would be getting my first Z3. I lived in Tampa at the time and my family was in NC, and I didn't know how to drive a stick. So I drove from Tampa to NC, grabbed my dad and drove down to Marietta, GA. He drove the Z3 back to NC, taught me how to drive it over a period of 3 days, then I did the trip back to FL solo. It was an unnerving experience every time I encountered a hill having only 3 days experience in a manual. |

Finnegan and I got lucky - he saw the listing for SPG's ///M on the board and mentioned it to me without realizing how much I'd been lusting after one!
We drove just under 100 miles each way, but did it a couple of times. Because we were purchasing from a private party and transferring his BMW loan to a new loan under our names, there were some extra steps involved too. And I couldn't be happier!

I flew from Chicago to Capel Hill, NC for mine, then drove back. Then again, I almost always have to road trip. My Z4 roadster was in Des Moines, IA. My 911SC was in Miami, FL. My 944 was in Richmond, VA. My 928S was in Warwick, RI. My Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was in Philadephia, PA.

Thanks for the very reassuring information, people! I was starting to think that only a crazy person would travel over 1000 miles to get a car, but it would seem that my situation is not unusual.
I can see why people might want to avoid a long road trip in a car like this, but enclosed transport costs are pretty high. And besides, the return trip ought to be a lot of fun if I don't wind up in jail. |

Was living in Phoenix and found my M coupe in Houston.
Flew out there with a buddy, signed the paperwork, and drove the 1,300 miles back.

Flew from Florida to St Louis for my "perfect car". Took 2-3 days to drive it home, stopped in Road Atlanta to watch some friends drift, just made a fun weekend out of it. Well worth it and I'd do it again.
