OBD-II-Code-P0301 - help

The car starting acting extremely strange just before i pulled into my street, prior to this i heard kind of a ringing noise, almost as if metal was vibrating.

Basically the car sounds like a west coast customs chopper right now, misfiring everywhere, gurgles pops u name it,

the throttle is very sketchy,

my ODB II scanner gave me 5 codes, 4 of them being 02 sensors from just installing my headers, the 5th was P0301 which is Misfire Detected in #1 Cylinder

Can anyone tell me what could have caused this? What I can do to fix?

My car is 06 if this is possibly a vanos-related issue that has not had the extended bolts replace the existing ones

recently installed performance mods: AA headers, RPi exhaust, TCKline coils (dunno if this helps but thought i'd add it in)

I was driving my car normally up to this point as well, maybe a few extra down shifts to hear my new exhaust set up

opinions?

Are the O2 sensor codes for primary or secondary O2 sensors? Primary sensor malfunctions can cause a misfire.

Vanos bolts are definitely a possibility. There's a DIY check on here somewhere. IIRC you don't actually look at the bolts themselves; instead, you try to wiggle one of the VANOS gears and check it for play. The DIY is for the valve adjustment.

Obviously don't drive the car.

Edit: What's the build date of your car?

Check to see if your air intake / filter is properly attached and secured.

I was just reading some post on the M3Forum.net with very similar symptoms and P0301 code. I think it was the VANOS solenoid in this guy's case.

... Edit: Here, I found it. Hope that helps narrow it down... http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=330862

Good luck!!!

^ Always an option. If the problems persist then you can rule out your install. It's possible the install is simply coincidental and there's no correlation to the problems you're experiencing. In which case if it's under warranty I'd rather have it on their dime (and rightfully so since it would be independent of the mods).

When you install your coils it is possible to not push them in fully causing a misfire. I had that problem on my E46M. Make sure to push them in firmly before locking them in place. That's an easy check so I would definitely try that.

Also make sure you did not cross your 02 sensors. That will make you throw all kinds of codes.

Give us the actual codes that you threw. There is also a fuse in the DME that sometimes gets blown which will throw half a dozen codes and put you in limp mode.

when you say cross your 02 sensors, do you mean putting them in the wrong spots in the headers? if so i made sure i marked each one where they were spose to go

Yes I meant keeping the pre and post sensors in their correct banks. People commonly mix them up and throw codes.

Update:

BMW called back and said it was the bolts in the VANOS that came loose and fucked everything up,

Warrenty IS covering it however and my car should be fixed sometime this week!

So, to everyone with an 06, GO AND CHANGE THOSE BOLTS ASAP!

Were you hearing any noises prior to this happening?
