2006 Z3 3.0i roadster vs 2008 135i convertible
Hi,
It's me again... Now, I hesitate between a 2006 Z3 3.0i roadster and 2008 135i m pack convertible... The N54 engine with 300 hp is awesome in the 135i, but the look of the Z4 is better. Also, the technology in the 135i seems a lot better.. What do you think? Thanx |

I think you will find that the interior of the 135 is a bit more upscale than the Z4 and the car is much more practical owing to its rear seating capability. I also think the 135 is a decent looking machine in its own right.
Its a tough call. If the car will be your main car, then I'd definitely go with the 135.

Well, you can install a rear-facing child seat in the Z4's passenger seat with its LATCH tethers as long as you use the switch by the passenger door hinge to disable the passenger airbags. The Z4 could then be used by either you or your wife, with the future child in the passenger seat.
We have a kid too and he is finally getting to the age where we can leave him at home for a bit and jump in the Z4 for a spin. But prior to that, there were many absolutely gorgeous summer evenings when we had no babysitter and the Z4 sat in the driveway, gleaming yes, but unused as I stared at it in frustration. But if you have someone who can pop by to let you and the missus go for a spin on those summer evenings - the Z4 is certainly worth a look. And if your kids friends are like my kids friends, they will certainly be in awe of 'your Dad's cool car!"

I guess I'll just come out and say it, the 1 series is fugly
Z4 will be more special as a weekend/summer car. Just my opinion...

Beauty is highly subjective. I like both and there are many times when I would have gotten much more use from a 1 series convertible.

I know, I'm just pissed that BMW calls the 1 series the spiritual successor to the 2002. Not even close.
Still fugly

A few thoughts after entertaining both briefly:
The 2008 1series was the first year for that I believe and had some reliability issues. The 1series is more practical for short drives with the rear seat. But that seat is cramped. Both are very fun and the looks are subjective. I preferred the roadster obviously but the 1 series is nice as well. Depends on what you want. I'm able to use the roadster as it's my commute car and I rarely get the kids. My wife does most of the hauling in her Forrester. You won't see many Z4's on the road; 1 series are much more common. In the end the Z just felt right for what I wanted. |

And yes the back seat is cramped by adult standards, but if the potential rear seat passengers are very young children, it could be a perfect fit.

I also contemplated a 135i convertible. But the looks just can't compare. I wanted to get something more practical that would allow me to take the kids but my wife convinced me to go for what I really wanted. So Z4 it was...
