Connector

It's a 6 pin connector with 5 wires.

Pin 1 Brown/Black
Pin 2 Slate (gray)/Red
Pin 3 Black/Slate (gray)
Pin 4 Green/Blue
Pin 5 Black/Yellow
Pin 6 Empty

I had a hard time seeing these because of the fact they are wrapped really tight and the lighting was not that good... The Slate (gray) may actually be white...

Hope this helps... Chuck I

I have a sport button.. wonder if there is a way to disable certain functions such as the increase in throttle sensitivity but still allowing the steering to be stiffer. Maybe severing the correct wire could achieve that, but then again it may throw a code too.

I may join you all in experimentation.

Unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram. I have the TIS CD but it's no help.. It would be interesting to know where the wires go... Chuck I

Pin 1 is BR/SW Brown/Black = Ground
Pin 2 is GR/RT Gray/Red = Dimmed lighting
Pin 3 is SW/GR/GE Black/Gray/Yellow = Power steering
Pin 4 is GN/BL/GE Green//Blue/Yellow = Power, fuse 7
Pin 5 is SW/RT/GE Black/Red/Yellow = To DME via module (VM)

Not sure this WDS print goes with your '03 car.

Ron,

As you have consistently provided over the years, this is more great data. Thanks!!

Before I mess with anything, do you think there would be any harm in interrupting the pin 5 wire to disable the throttle change? (not looking to induce faults)

I really want to tun sport mode again, but autocross is much harder with the throttle being too sensitive. I want to get rid of that functionality, but keep the steering tighter.

Don't know. You would have to try and see.

Very interesting. As far as cutting the hole, I think the console is perforated underneath and just needs to be punched out.

It might also be a difference between a 2.5 and a 3.0.

To me it looks like it should work for both. BUT, I won't know if it works at all until I plug it in. My hope is that the software is there... From the way the switch is built it looks like the light will function but I'll have to wait to see if the DME and the EPS will respond. I know that on my M, the Sport button make a difference so I'm hoping I'll be able to tell the difference here. There's another issue, your connector may not be there. As you can read above, JRA's car didn't have it... My car is a very early unit built in 12/2002. I lucked out. My suggestion would be that before anyone buys the switch that they check to see if the connector is there. You can get the switch for less than $80, probably cheaper if you shop around... Chuck I

Yeah, but if you can add a little functionality it is still worth it IMO. It is not like he is just switching badges (where did that even come from?)

If it was easy to change my 3.0 into a 3.2 (dumb example, I know) I would do it in a heartbeat. Would you give me crap cause I didn't have the steering wheel and suspension, etc from the M? I doubt it.

I think this is a good find personally

See if you have the VM module.
~5 x 6" black plastic box.
In the back of the left front shock tower.
Will post a pic if I get a chance.

Question

A starting point for Manual/3.0s/Newer models

I have a 2006 3.0i

I'm pretty new to getting my hands dirty when it comes to my Z but this interested me so I figured what the hell and I jumped right in.

First, I checked under the hood, and although I don't know what it means, I do have that black VM module.

Second, I got the knob and boot off (easy enough).

I was left with this (sorry, iPhone quality here):

After carefully (it wasn't difficult at all) removing the foam, I saw this:

As described, it's carpeted. I don't know anything about wires, and at this point the iPhone was really grainy in low light conditions, but this is what I saw along the left side:

I wasn't about to start pulling random wires but is the connector needed in this grouping? Or do I need to reach further under the carpet?

Don't know if any of this really helps...
