Idle suddenly dropping and engine shuts off

Hey my fellow z4 m'ers! My car keeps the idle on 800 to 900 rpm then choke to 500 then dies.. Sometimes it kicks back to 900 but sometimes it just does.. What's wrong?

Maybe your idle control valve needs cleaning or isn't working properly. Need to see if any codes are stored to know for sure (even with no check engine light). Just a guess, but it would be the first place I would start.

Garage List
Weird you just posted this. Same exact thing happened to me last week. Was sitting at the red light waiting for it to turn green, and bam ............ car just shut off like I had turned the ignition off. It cranked back up and no issues since.

Here is the Idle Control Valve:

Here is a thread on M3 Forum about cleaning and symptoms and checking it to see if it's frozen in place.

Everybody might need some more info to completely help you out. When does it do this? At first start or coming to a stop. Hot engine or cold engine?

The hose clamps that hold that on are crimp clamps and are narrower than your average hose clamp. Keep that in mind.

Common. Run a few bottles of Techron Concentrate through. Alternatively do a few track days... it cleans the injectors spic n' span.

I just cleaned my intake and idle ait bypass last night and it was a piece of cake!

I used 1 pair of slip joint pliers (for throttle botty clips), a 10mm socket and wrench and two zipties to replace the one time use clamps on the bypass itself.

Took everything apart and had it back together inside of two hours with a couple beers mixed in.

Idle is waaay smother, the car overall just seems to run and drive better and is a little smoother on throlle.

Try unplugging your MAF first and see if it makes a difference. The car should be able to run without the MAF plugged in, as it goes into "open loop" mode. The MAF is the sensor directly between the airbox and the intake manifold. This check should take you about 30 seconds. Unplug it with the engine off, dude

Cool, glad that solved it for you. What did you use to clean it? Also, could you tell if the valve was stuck? How dirty was it?

Just curious.
