Y know, I think I like this show much better than Top Gear, which gets a bit too silly sometimes. And I confess that Clarkson's constant insults to Z4s and their owners is growing more offensive to me as time goes on.

Does 5th Gear commonly post it's episodes on YouTube?

Thanks again!!

The e85 is a great chassis and the drivetrain is bulletproof. What's not to love....?

That was my thought as well. New cars in the UK seem to have astronomically high prices, but there must also be some massive depreciation when looking at the used prices in the UK. There's no way you would find a Z4 around here for $7,000. You could find some older Z3's at that price point. Used Boxsters would probably cost even more.

The recent Top Gear also had three cars bought at 1,500 GBP, which is about $2,235. Those cars were a BMW E39 528i touring, Subaru WRX wagon (bugeye model), and a Volvo 850R wagon. All three are pretty nice older cars, and would still command higher used prices in the US unless they had any serious issues.

For sure. And if you could, it would likely be one with very high mileage and some "issues".

At least you are not in Canada where we seem to have astronomical new car prices - AND minimal depreciation, at least on nice machines like BMWs.

Now I should qualify that statement. Over the weekend, my wife spied a new X3 28i in the parking lot of the local dealer. For fun, we went in and got a quote. And to compare, I priced one on BMW's web site, as closely as I could, recognizing that the packages are different. I was surprised to see a price difference of only about $4500. Now, to buy the US car, i would have to spend money on a plane ticket, hotel for a night or two, gas, a ferry crossing to my province (yup, I live on Gilligan's Island), BMW recall letter, RIV import fee, and probably a customs broker. That could be $2800 in total. I would only be better off by about $1700 and while the US car gets warranty in Canada, i don't think it would qualify for the 4 years maintenance included part, adn I probably coulsd not buy an extended warranty from BMW that would apply in Canada. So, surprisingly, the Canadian price on an X3 ain't so bad when compared to the US.

Surprised how S2000 didn't make it here.
I've had S2000,RX8,Z4 and Z4 was my least favorite.
I must say finishes were better than other two, but that's about it.
I was never excited to drive that car and it reminded to think of S2000 EVERY TIME I drove it.
I was a happy 5 yr old kid whenever I was in S2000!

Thanks for sharing. I always find it interesting when comparing vehicle costs across different markets. While it sounds like the savings of buying a USDM BMW and importing it back to Canada would be minimal, it potenially could be worth while if you were planning a trip/vacation to the US anyway sort of like the Euro delivery option. What about with used cars? I suppose it may be more economical to import a used car from the US if there is minimal depreciation on used cars in Canada.

If you lived in the Toronto/Mississauga area the cost and time to get to Buffalo would be minimal (couple hour drive). I would give up free maintenance for 4 years to save $4500 on a new BMW. Why don't more do it?

I had a someone fly from Regina to Cincinnat to buy my used GTI. Him and his son flew here (wired money before he came which was surprising) and then drove back the estimated 23 hours. I sold it for $6500 and it spent almost all it's life in the Southeast U.S. and was close to perfect as a 100k mile 6 year car could be. Their opinion was 6 year old car in the same condition up there was impossible to find and it would have cost another $4k. I was worried about them getting here on their one way ticket and not liking the car (luckily didn't happen).

I can offer this observation. When I bought my 2006 Z4 3.0Si from the US back in 2009, it had 19,000 miles on it and one year of original warranty left. It was loaded with options, save for heated seats and nav. Compare that to a car I found in Canada which was a 2003 Z4 that would have cost me $4,000 more, had more than twice the mileage, a lot fewer options, the older less powerful 3 litre engine and no warranty.

On second thought, i think the price difference was $14,000.........

I had quite the contrary experience. Of course mine was a z4m, but it felt like a grown up s2000 with low end it never had and tail happy rear end that was easily controlled....I miss that car

If I could find a Z4 for under $7000 I would buy it and drop an M5 V10 and SMG in it. A quick search turned up a handful of 2.5s for double that price. Things must be very different on that side of the pond.

as an expat brit living in Canada, I can add this. New car prices in the UK are indeed much higher than over here (even Canada) but the price you see is the price you pay, ie tax and everything is included, we call it on-the-road pricing. Car depreciation is brutal over there as the number plate is linked to the vehicle and so clearly illustrates a car's age. This combined with high numbers of corporately-sponsored vehicles, ie a BMWs is a perks of a low-mid management level job (remember there are no benfits packages to be had, healthcare is free to all) Then there are no taxes on second hand car sales either if sold privately, so this pulls prices down even more. To illustrate the point, my 2005 3.0 z4 was into the $20,000 range by the time i got out of the dealership last year. Same car similar mileage is only 7000 pounds ($11200) right now, ouch

I've seen him drive a few times.
If nothing else, he does have some brass ones.
