Another OEM exhaust mod

I purchased a spare set of mufflers from a forum member with the intention of modifying them. Here's the complete process, with pictures and video clips, of my OEM exhaust mod. I followed threads from Exdos and V3.2mc on how they did theirs (thanks guys) and worked with an exhaust shop (Dan's mufflers in Lynwood WA) to find a solution to increase (good) noise and avoid drone. I'm thrilled with the results. There is absolutely no drone and a livelier exhaust tone. I really wanted to do some sort of exhaust valve by-pass set-up, but no exhaust shop would do it (and I don't have the skills nor equipment to do it myself).

The mufflers came with aftermarket tips, but one of them got damaged during the mailing process. I intended to replace them with a better stainless steel version, but I was having problems sourcing ones that I liked. One of my old cars had black muffler tips (Vauxhall cavalier turbo; UK car) and I thought the MC might suit them, so I used this opportunity to try it out. After all, if they didn't look good I could just replace them when I found a set of stainless that I liked. I straightened the one bent tip as best I could and then sprayed them black with hi-temp paint. The tips were finished with a semi gloss high temp paint. They turned out really good.

I'm really happy with this mod.

Awesome, stock-ish sound with nice pops I would've done this instead of buying one if I saw it earlier, great job!

Sounds great and I like the dark tips. Did you replace the packing material before closing it up? Any drone?

If you don't mind me asking, how much did all the parts/labor cost for this?

I love the idea of no drone but it does sound a little raspy for my taste. I paid $275 for a custom setup at an exhaust shop. It sounds great with no rasp but it drones quite a bit

Dalecan, if you can manage it, I'd love to hear what this sounds like in the cabin or outside as you pull away/drive by. Basically, under normal driving instead of just reving.

Let us know if you get anymore clips!

Gtfour,

The mod you did for Alex, as per your photos, was designed by me. You made a very tidy job of it.

Exact, he ask me that design and he is really happy with the result! I might do the same to my mufflers before selling my car now that I've put the OEM US headers back on the car.

Effectively, I'm very satisfied with this mod. From what I have measured with the Dashdyno, it would give an increase in torque of 9-17 lb*ft between 5700 and 7500 RPM, exactly where it is needed the most on a track. The lower band is on par with the OEM configuration. Marc, I pass neirby your parent's house every Saturday around 12:30 if you want to ear the final result. The overall sound and tone remains OEM but it is louder at low RPM.

Your in Monterey and even though you live near a track, there aren't really any race shops that i know of. plenty in the bay area. Find a race shop and ask their fabricator to do it. If you can't find one, pm me and I will recommend one in Sacramento for you to ship them to.

I might just have to do this with my OEM to get rid of the drone from my Magnaflow!

Nice Dale, I still have my stock exhaust but got Remus and it sounds quite similar but a lot more money. I'm in Seattle so I know where dans in Lynwood is. Where do you go for valve adjustments etc.
