So I had an absolutely terrible day. Went to pick the m coupe up from where I store it and couldn't find the key, anywhere. I always leave it on a hanger and it's not there. Luckily the car was Unlocked, my doing, but I literally searched for 3 hours, retraced my steps and did everything they tell you do to when your 6 years old and lose something. To make things worse, I was meeting my father to go to summit point this weekend with the car. So those plans dissolved, and he wasn't to enthusiastic to see his pantera sit in the rain on the trailer while we searched for the key(it's never seen water).

So how do I go about acquiring a new key? I don't even have a wallet key. Any advice will be appreciated for my incompetent self

The dealer should be able to help you out.

Any idea on cost? Isn't a new key with programming around 300?

From 2011 post on e46f... much better price than going through the stealership directly (will be in the $300 range)...

$130 ISH at http://thebmwpartstore.com/ - Contact Mike, amazing guy and a sponsor here. Need proof of ownership aka registration and DL copy.

Suggestion: it won't be cheap, but then again you're saving a buttload of money if you go this route - pick up a spare.

After checking my receipts, I found I bought 2 keys at BMW of Alexandria. The first one ran $207 and the second, a mistake on their part, was $126.

Sorry if I misled you!

Prices on keys will be all over the place based on geographic location and greed. My dealership only charged me $140.

To the original OP, it would be well worth your time to go to the dealership and ask some questions. The advantage that the dealership has, is that the new key is overnighted to the dealer from BMW. You will have it the next day.

You may want to think about buying TWO keys, so this is not that great an issue in the future.

You can also buy what's called a plastic "lockout key" at your BMW dealer which is designed to unlock the door/trunk if you accidentally lock your keys in the car. it's small and thin enough to keep in your wallet. It will also start the car, although I would only use it in an emergency situation (like when someone steals your ///M jacket at a bar with your car keys in the pocket).

It's well worth it to have two regular keys and the lockout key.

So to update anyone who is curious, I talked with my local dealership, BMW of annapolis and was quoted $183 a key, and it would be in my hands in 2 days. I contacted BMW of silver spring(tischer) and they quoted me $198 plus a fee to have it synced to the car. Then I contacted getbmwparts.com which is actually just the online store for the parts department of BMW of silver spring, and they sell the key for 130, but apparently BMW of silver spring doesn't like when you order online and says BMW won't let you anyway. Lastly, I contacted the recommended bmwminipartstore which is the online store for a dealership in Ohio, and they told me to email them a picture of my license and registration and I would get the key in 2 days for 167.77. They were great and I should have the key Wednesday! Great experience with them. So after 2 months I will Atleast get to start the car and winterize it. Thanks for the help everyone!
