BG Transmission service

recap from previous threads!!!!

So I'm at the point when I need to service my SMG transmission, took it to the dealer and they keep telling me "lifetime fluid BS"

So finally got over the phone with BMW USA, and they said that same things, but mentioned that if the SMG fluid is serviced, it will need to have the software updated. Took it to a few indy places and they say they can do the service, but all of them work with non-OEM fluid, and after mentioning software they were like......whoa....whoa.... that we can't do.

Finally found a shop that have the equipment to update the software and they were great talking about SMG, so it seems they know what to do, but they mentioned that they only give warranty if the service is performed with BG Transmission fluid, and that in fact the specs were better than OEM.

Any thoughts??

Is SMG fluid that special or BG fluid will be same/better??
Should we just replace the fluid or flush and replace??

Any other details you know or can share with me will be welcomed, thanks

DJ

What ever happened with your SMG service?

Hey, about to purchase a 2003 Z4 3.0i roadster with the SMG transmission. It has 56,000 miles on it. I haven't looked over the records yet so see what has been done to it so far, just looking ahead and trying to get my head around this unique tranny.

Were you servicing due to mileage or was there a problem?

Thanks

This post would probably be a bit more appropriate in the general Z4 discussion area.

A quick google search turned up this thread. It's on the M3 boards but should be roughly the same, perhaps.

What I learned from that thread (and what you'll learn after reading the thread) that on the SMG there is oil in the actual gearbox, which is the same oil as the 6MT, and there's also (basically ATF) in the hydraulic pump for the SMG.

Seems like the easiest thing to do would be to just suck the fluid out of the reservoir and replace it, and do that maybe once a week for a month. That way you don't have to use the bleed procedure and use the computer.
