Engine Noise

I purchased a Z4M about a month ago and was wondering about a noise I'm hearing. From about 3000-3500rpms under partial throttle (10-20%) theres a raspy engine noise that sounds very raw and mechanical. It only occurs under that load condition. Above those conditions to WOT it is perfectly smooth. Any thoughts, perfectly normal? this is the only S54 car I've driven so I appreciate any help.

I just asked someone with an e46 M3 this exact question yesterday . . . mine does it, his does it, I think they all do it. I believe it's the VANOS -- see here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=173044

same noise on mine....I actually did not notice it until I read this.
