There's also those beanbag looking things that are marketed for the same purpose.

I hate the beanbag... i ordered one.. was 8 bucks on buy.com.. I have my iphone mounted on the wood trim since it mounts suction cups well... basically I wanna use my iphone on the dash so I can use it to record my trip to work.. in case some ass hat slams into me

No, it will not stick since the Z4's dash is too textured. My "Jelly sticky pad" worked on the E90, but not on the E86.

Perhaps a magnet mount instead?

I bought a very small mount from Amazon that has 3M tape on the back. I attached it to the wood and have the Nuvi below and to the right of the vents. So far it has stuck to the wood during five months of Fla summers. The car was parked outside for a week when I had my driveway redone and could not get into the garage and it stayed on. If I do want to remove it, some dental floss will cut the tape and some careful removing will get the remaining adhesive off. I'll take a picture and post if you are interested.

I have a Garmin 1350 (which nicely matches the black and silver interior of my car) and I put that disc on the panel under the heater controls. That way, the GPS sits just in front of the top up/down buttons.
When you remove the GPS, you hardly see the disc, if at all. If you place the disc carefully, the GPS unit shouldn't cover the roof buttons either. And that little panel is only ten bucks (so I've been told) if you ever decide that putting a disc on it was a bad idea.
