Cleaner for Style 108 Rims
Hey Folks,
Do any of you have suggestions on a good, effective wheel cleaner that is (1) safe to use on BMW OEM Style 108 rims (those are split rims I think) and (2) is reasonably priced? I bough some Autoglym wheel cleaner the other day and although the label on the bottle says its safe for all wheel types, it also says that its not to be used on split rims. Thanks in advance.

I use the Sonax Wheel Cleaner. like $15 (US) a bottle, but a little goes a long way if you use a brush along with it, as opposed to just spraying and rinsing.
here's the thread that sold me on it http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthre...ighlight=sonax it worked well on the 224 style rims...don't know exactly what you mean by split rims...

When i stayed in the U.K. these wheels had a bad rep, high upkeep to keep corrosion at bay. Last edited by Flying Scotsman; 05-24-2011 at 04:55 PM.. Reason: additional info |

From the reading I've done I'd say Sonax Full Effect (which is what I just ordered) or P21s. Not sure about the cost compared to other stuff though.

For what its worth department, I am a firm user of the Griot's Wheel cleaner...safe and approved on these wheels and its been great. NO side affects and cost effective. Gotta love these 108's...as they used to say in the Brit camp about wire wheels...you either have them or your want them. LOL...oh BTW-- I found a GREAT tool at Ace Hardware, [not sure about Canada re: purchase place] but its the Sonic Scrubber kit...www.sonicscrubber.com.
Its about 20 USD here and comes with four attachments and works like a sonic tooth brush. Add a AA battery and the little soft brush rotates faster than I can see, does all the allen bolt heads quickly safely and fast. I can go around the whole wheel bolts, get all the dust out after quite dirty trip, and its whole wheel done, in 15 seconds. NO more toothbrushes, rags on the finger tip and then not getting it all. Just a thot for you...nothing better than this little sonic thingy...good luck. |

used sonax as well when i still had stock pads. after swapping for axxis deluxe ceramic pads all round, brake dust and dirty wheels are a thing of the past. seriously. all i use now is a simple damp rag to wipe my wheels down about once a month.

Thanks guys.
Lots of great ideas for sure. Can anyone tell me if Sonax and the Sonic Scrubber are available in Canada? I checked the websites of two chains up here (Canadian Tire and Princess Auto) and did not see those items.

Huz, looks like it's available in Canada--at least in parts of the country as I think you're probably trying to avoid import taxes and "duty" and so on.
Let me know if you can't find and send me a PM. |

Sonax is a German product actually, but I get all my stuff from Autogeek.net. I want to say they ship to CA but i have no way of knowing for sure. Sounds like Finn can hook you up and if not, let me know and i'll help you out!
EDIT: They DO ship to Canada and even have a breakdown of shipping costs. OH CANADA

Thanks all, and Finn and 007!
There are three big old Canadian Tire stores here in town, so I'll pop out after work tonight to see if they have the Sonic Scrubber in stock. I'll let you know if I need a hand to get my hands on any of this stuff. I'm hoping to leave the scrubber next to the toothpaste in the bathroom for a chuckle.

That Sonic Scrubber Kit is not an autmotive thing...its usually found in Hardware, Home equipment stores, and is used for tile grout cleaning or kitchen sink edges etc...which is why they have 4-5 different brush densities and softness levels. I use the softest in the kit, and its a wow. Never used it in the house. Doubt if ANY auto store will have it...might check with hardware, Home Depot type places in the cleaning and tile sections. Great product and soft as can be on those allen bolts but the brake dust is GONE.
