At crossroads - shopping for a 2nd car
Background: I had a new from dealer Z4MC when it first came out. Love the car and have missed it greatly but I needed more room. Some cars later, I'm now driving an E90 M3 which I also greatly adore and it handles all of my hauling needs and fun needs but drinks gas like mad - I average 11mpg. I'm potentially going to work some distance away so am thinking of getting a Z4 as a daily driver.
Given this situation, would you get a newer Z4 with the 3.0T engine and DCT or another Z4MC. Sure these are subjective questions... If I go Z4MC route, I'd likely drop a supercharger in it now that they're available and the pricing difference will allow for additional mods to really make it an amazing car - but is the sum of the parts greater than the other whole? Or does it become a money hole? Thoughts? |

What are your objectives? Fuel economy, fun, or something in the middle?
If you're after better mileage a Z4M with a blower isn't going to get you there. You'll probably be in the same range as the M3 if you're getting 11 MPG with the S65 -- I got around 16-17 mixed driving with my E92 M3, so you're driving style + blower, which is insane fun, well, you get the idea. Again, blower on a Z4M--so much fun. Put some coils on it, a few other things, it's a wonderful hard edged and fast machine. The N54 (E89) gets good mileage cruising, better than the M, but it can drink gas too based on driving style (and tuning). It's also a very different car than the M, softer, heavier, not as raw. More of a cruiser than a hard edged sports car. That's my two cents. Tell us more about goals/objectives--that will help. Last edited by Finnegan; 05-05-2014 at 12:59 AM.. |

If I were you I'd get a newer Z4 with a warranty, better gas mileage, and less problems associated with aging. I do think the Z4MC will be more fun than a regular Z4, but you're not looking for a fun car... You're looking for a practical car.
ACTUALLY if you don't love the M3 then why don't you sell it, get a 325i/328i for a daily driver, and get an M Coupe for the fun stuff?

Thanks for the thoughts gang. Ironically it's a semi need semi excuse situation. The heart says z4mc was my favorite car owned so far. Mind you it's been a runs table of cars... E36 m3, e90 m3, mb c63, b6 s4 among others. So nostalgia is pulling me back. Practicality here is only for fuel use, and I guess I forgot that keeping the engine room "on" (aka 3500 rpm+) means low mpg.
While I can appreciate the new aspects of the e89, I don't like the limited availability of manual tranny on the 35i engines. The thinking was pass the e90 to the significant other, sell her e92 335xi and get a z4 for my daily driving thereby keeping the (haha) utility e90. This isn't going to be a SWOT or charted decision obviously. Any of you own both z4mc and an e89 to share comparos? Cheers |
