Thumbs down DAMN second gear..

Hi All,

I have owned my M coupe for about 3 weeks now, having owned a 330i, e36 M3, and e46 M3.. i can truely say the Z4 M coupe is amazing in everyway... superior than any other M car i have driven

As the saying goes.. with the good comes the bad & the bad for me is currently the changing from 1st to 2nd gear.. with the sport on and DSC deactivated the gear box tends to grind when changing!! it is currently driving me insane - i have never had this issue on any of my other cars...and it happens constantly..

I have researched it and found quite a few Z4 owners have been complaining about the syncro's and gear box..

Does anyone have any advise or info on this issue?

After 20K miles on my car, the problem seems to have gone away for the past few months...It is annoying though and tough to replicate consistently, hence the reason i was unable to have a new tranny installed by the stealership...

The problem is that the Z4M uses the Z4 3.0si transmission instead of the M3's. Makes no sense to me as to why they did that, but it is definitely a flaw.

Hmm, I've never had a problem with grinding; it tends to be a bit finicky when shifting from 1st to 2nd, but you just have to smooth it out. Stupid question, but you're sure you're depressing the clutch fully?

How many miles on it? When was the last time all the gear fluids were replaced?

I haven't had the problem. I wonder if those who do unload the motor before shifting? In other words, back off the throttle a bit first. I don't really like to rev the car in first to redline anyway. I don't do that with my bike either. It's sort of abusive ultimately.

Wouldn't that suck to have to double clutch a BMW to shift from 1st to 2nd!
My non-M will do likewise occationaly, 4k on it.

My brother went as far as to get his tranny replaced by BMW on their coin and to tell you the truth it really didn't solve anything. After 28,000 miles I have to say that the grind is I think paritally caused by shiffting technique... I have learned to be shift as fast as I want with out the grind but there is a certain way you have to hold the shifter.

With nearly 3900 miles, the transmission is notchy in general when cold but seems butter smooth once it's warmed up; I've never had a grind either before or after the Zeck modified lock valve.

The shift from 1st to 2nd can be jerky at time but I never experienced a grind. After 13K kilometers, it's mostly smooth. I also never deactivate the DSC and use rarely the Sport button when not on the highway.

Once your slightly past the friction point after shifting from 1st to 2nd add a little bit of gas. That makes it nice and smooth.

Double clutching is for downshifting not upshifting.

For the OP you have to modify how you shift, you cannot jerk it into gear, you have to smoothly but firmly and evenly press it into gear. They don't like being mashed on.

Additionally if you ever try to shift into second from a wheel spin scenario, just forget about it going smoothly.

It seems dumb that we don't have the e46 M transmission, but just think to yourself, do you really want the 7 year old transmission in the car? Even the "regular" BMWs have better transmissions now.

I've considered changing the tranny oil to a redline or another premium brand a few times. Usually helps with things like this.

Oh and if you really want you can fit an e46 transmission, you'll need a new driveshaft (actually pretty easy to get made) and have to modify the shift linkage some.

Worked fine for upshifting in old racing transmissions that had no sycnros. Worked fine for old trucks when shifting from granny low to first gear with out grinding........oh well.

I thought double clutching was mainly for rev matching without wearing out your tranny? Why would you need to do that in an upshift, or am I missing a crutial reason for double clutching?
