Another One Bites the Dust
Yeah, it's official, my car has been written off.
I was driving home one night and literally one second of inattention cost me my baby. Approaching a roundabout, there was one car in front of me slowing down, as was I. I swear to everything I saw her brake lights go off and her car squat down like she was going to continue through, so I looked right (I'm in the UK = opposite side of road) to see if I was clear then *BAM*. She ended up stopping. There was no traffic in the way so I'm still befuddled why she stopped! BUT as it is, I hit her, my fault. That's the extent of the damage, I thought no way it would be THAT expensive to fix...then again I am in the UK...£ are worse than $. Wasn't going that fast since we were slowing at an intersection, but it is what it is. After a couple of weeks doing my due diligence in finding alternative garages, parts, etc. the chassis ended up being twisted enough that it was deemed unsafe. So here I am ///M-less. Bumper, fascia, passenger headlight, oil/AC radiators, new windshield and labor (plus other minor parts to fix all the big parts obviously) and VAT (20%). Windshield got cracked from the passenger airbag going off and the part of the dash that comes open smacked the window. I made sure they did whatever geometric tests to see exactly how bad the chassis was because I thought there was absolutely no way it twisted at that speed. Had to be no more than 20. After looking at all these pics for so long I think it might have been that Go Mini Go plate holder that screws into the tow hook. Since that's where the impact happened and it's directly connected to chassis, this is the only way I can think it happened. Sucks. The garage was nice though and took my exhaust off for me and put the OEM stuff back on, but I still have the brand friggin new Evolve tune on there, plus engine and tranny mounts, VMR wheels with tires that are like 3 weeks old, the list goes on. I'm going to see where the car gets stuck at for salvage and get whats bits I can off the car while I can. The insurance gave me $25K for write off, so I guess it's not all bad; in the end it is just a car, but to me it was so much more. So yes, I WILL be back in an M Coupe soon, but gotta find the right one. I'll still check in on the forums and say hi and chip in where I can, but yeah...she's gone. One more to add to the list making your car that much more rare. Anyone know how much it costs to ship a vehicle overseas? lol Other than the aftermarket parts I plan on taking off, if possible, what OEM stuff should I look at removing, maybe for resale? Seats? Where's the DME so I can remove that and keep the computer that has the tune on it?? I want the engine out, but that's wishful thinking lol. I've got dreams of taking it out, stripping it down and learning all the intricacies of all that is the S54 and maybe one day rebuild a full-on race engine. One day at a time though I guess...

Thanks everyone.
And yeah, it would've been nice if it was £25K! But it was $$. I've contacted Evolve about the tune issue, but haven't heard back from Imran yet.

Sorry about your //M. Hopefully your new one will be even better, and glad you weren't injured in the process.

So sorry to hear about that man, best of luck in the search.
The following items are small-ish and easy to sell cupholders/vents steering wheel shifter knob if its upgraded sidesills if they're in really good shape flip up ash tray thing seats but very hard to sell non-local trim if its anything other than aluminum first aid boxes if you have them suspension brace? |

I know I would be heartbroken to have this happen to me so I can only imagine how you are feeling. These cars are quite special and folks like us get very attached to them; they have a tangible spirit that is very rare these days. I'm sorry to see her go.
But - I'm glad you are okay and I look forward to hearing about your new car. So at least the upside is that somewhere there is an M out there that is about to get a great home with someone who truly appreciates her. Not a bad day!

I'm am a little surprised the chassis twisted with a square on front hit, must be that license plate holder as you say. Sigh. Sucks.
Being in the UK you may find a Carbon Black coupe like mine. |

Dude, so sorry to see this...
I've had the EXACT same situation in my past; I was driving a MK2 GLI that i'd built up. I was approaching a rotary (here in New England we call roundabouts rotaries), the person in front of me yield for oncoming traffic, then there was an opening, they went for it, I looked over, realized that I could also make it and gunned it. The person in front got cold feet and withdrew and I rammed their car with such force that i had to be towed. |

What's the best way to get the side skirts off without damaging them? Would that little trim kit you guys use for the bumpers work? I'll do some looking around. yousefnjr, what do you mean windshield cowl? Like the rubber piece/weather strip thing? I've actually got a brand new one in the bag. Was going to get the windshield replaced before I went back to germany, rock chip from before started to spread a bit in the cold. Quote:

The plan would've been to buy the car back from the insurance company and get the repairs done much cheaper myself. But it is what it is like I said, live and learn...the hard way. I do know one thing...I'm never buying a Mazda 3! That's the rental I got for the time being and man that thing sucks. The driver's bay (cockpit if you will) is terribly small and uncomfortable! Not to mention it's slow as balls... I'll keep the forums in the loop on what happens in the future, pop in say hi and whatnot. Probably use the money to build that track-dedicated toy I've been saving for, and since I'll be in the home of the 'Ring again, why not? haha

- side skirts is a good idea too if they're aero side skirts, if they're regular I don't think they'd be worth the effort, because presumably all the extra ones from the people that bought aero side skirts are already cluttering the market. - steering wheel is separate from the airbag, the airbag is just that center piece. seems unlikely the actual wheel would be damaged by the airbag going off. here's a pic of the steering wheel alone: http://www.getbmwparts.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462 - yes lid from the ashtray is what I meant. you can only get it from BMW by buying the whole ashtray, so its a desireable part for anyone who has damaged their lid at all. - mirrors is a really good idea, a complete mirror assembly costs over $500 per side. the glass alone i think costs around $100-$200 per side. - visors probably worth it. price is not that high but its literally two screws per side and they come right off. - maybe the rear view mirror in the center. an autodimming one probably runs $500 or so, so that should be easy to sell - interior trim is probably the highest value/pound item to ship, very lightweight but worth at least $400-500 for a non-aluminum set. really need to reconsider my license plate mount now, glad you told us about that. |

sorry to see this, if theirs any parts that you want to sell on before it goes to insurance, if you haven't declared mods you REALLY need to take them off anyway as they can void your insurance etc,..

007 Mcoupe,
Sorry to hear about your misfortune! I feel your pain. I purchased my "Dream Car" a 2012 Boss 302 New from the factory. Several months later, while participating in a HPDE Track event, a 20-something wrecked his POS Cobalt SS into the side of my Baby, due to ill prepared Brakes. As it happened on track, and I did not purchase track insurance, Yes, Oh well! You'll find a New baby! |
