I installed my afe intake and there's something i noticed, when going uphill or even when mashing the throttle on 2K RPM for example (or a high throttle) the intake tend to make a tinny growly sound that tends to go away and transform to a kind of a howl on higher RPMs.

Is this normal? i don't like that tinny sound, i just want the induction howl and growl

Yeah, I noticed the same thing when I had mine, which is one of the reasons why I sold it. It sounded nice at 5k + but didn't impress me with the RPM's below that.

Sounds very tinny under 5K. Like a badly designed intake, although it is quite good.

I am thinking of modifying mine to eliminate that kind of rattle and leave the induction sound.

I think that i will need vibration dampeners, i will put on the intersection parts of the housing and the chassis which should reduce this effect and leave the induction sound.

No 'tinny' sound here.

Were either of you tuned for the intake? (ESS, AA, etc)
If not you weren't experiencing its potential either

When I had AFE on mine it never made any tinny sound...only deep and loud bass!

I wonder if something is rubbing due to vibration or if the cover isn't on tightly?

Maybe my choice of words is wrong.

It's still a loud growl but it's like an american muscle car type of a growl, not CSL snork type.

To rephrase, you hear the deep growl but there's an extra sound that seems like metal on metal shriek

The metal shriek is the one i hate, i want a CSL grunt and snork like the car is a badass instead of a fake v8 sound

I dunno...I honestly never heard any sound resembling a metal shriek when I had my AFE, and I listened very carefully through all types of driving and loads...

Did you reuse the stock ball like mushy bushing to mount the case of the AFE ? because i am thinking about puttin this part underneath the afe housing.

I feel that the metal to metal contact of the housing and the chassis is the reason why i am hearing this metallic sound when hard throttling on low RPM

Yep, kept that mushy thing under there cause I thought removing it would cause rattling.

Which filter do you have? Oil or Dry? The "shriek", noise is probably from the air rushing in?

I just installed the aFe and made a recording with a Tascam DR-05 recorder. I don't feel the aFe is as deep or growly as I'd like it compared to my E46 K&N cai.

Thanks for this post. After a brief experiment, I've found that this mushy thing plays a huge role in toning down the tinny sound from the aFe intake.

Here's what the mushy thing looks like from the underside:

It's part #13717539903 here: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=13_1174

I found that the aFe housing fits much better without said mushy thing, but the sound was tinny. Almost like you could hear the valve metallic noise amplified. With the mushy thing, the housing doesn't seat quite right, but the tinny noise is gone and the low growl is heard more clearly. I'm so glad to get rid of the annoying tinny noise!

Here's how it currently sits in my setup. Was yours similar?

There was a bit of a fitment issue after adding the mushy bushing. Of the two mounting points to the body, i could only comfortably affix one, due to the increased height of the housing due to the mushy bushing. The second one I left like this:
