Changing the oil myself - 06 Z4M coupe

I've tried to find Castrol 10w60 everywhere. So, where can I get the oil, filter, and are there any special instructions compared to say a S52?

Castrol 10 w 60 oil distribution

Lat year Castrol told me the oil is only distributed through BMW dealers.

So far I haven't heard any different.

I wouldn't worry about getting Castrol. There's better oil out there, although that's a whole different argument. I personally prefer Mobil 1 and have run that in all my bikes and cars with no problems. As long as you stick to the proper synthetic weight you should be set. Don't let BMW fool you that you can only use their own oil...

I ordered a 10 pack of filters from germanfilters.com and they shipped em very fast for a great price (about $40 shipped within 2-3 days). Both my 525i and Z4 take the same filter.

I purchase my TWS 10W-60 oil and filter from Tischer.
Here is the latest guidance from BMW NA regarding synthetic engine oils: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx
The document was published in January 2008 and specifies Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil, or Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420) is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines.
Not much room for interpretation there.

The BMW NA letter is very brand and weight specific regarding approved oils and they must be LL-01 rated.
The only two other than the BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 017 866) that are widely available on the US market are: Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30 (AutoZone) and Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40 (everywhere). The other two approved oils are very difficult to find in the US. The approved Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30 is NOT the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 you commonly find on auto supply store shelves. The same applies to the approved Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30. The one that meets LL-01 is the Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30 which also is not commonly found on auto supply store shelves.

Normally you might be right. Today you're not. we're talking about an s54, other companies don't even make a proper weight for it.

You would have to be crazy to use anything but TWS 10W-60 in an S54 engine unless you really knew what you were doing and don't mind BMW being difficult on engine related warranty claims.

This is an M S54 engines hes talking about,

Please let us all know which Wal-Mart it is you find 10w60 oil in please
I'll give you a hint, The Wal-Mart is called "Your Dealer"

This oil Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w60 is required for your M engine and is only available at the dealer (and a few BMW specific places online)

Prices vary from $9 to $13 a liter, (possibly more depending on dealer)
You need 6 bottles for the change but only use 5.5L

once again, Liters, Not quarts

agreed, it may not matter for your 3.0, but you dont just dump any oil in these motors...

not worth the few dollars you save in the long run

I've never seen 10-60 other then castrol. Closest I've found is amsoil 20-60. Which just means it's thicker at start up and during warm up.

But given the nature of this engine, which a lot of people don't understand that it is quite unique. I would just use the 10-60 and do.

They don't make a 10w60 so its useless for an M
I haven't tried it in my other BMW, again for that I use dealer 5w30 Oil

I use Motul 300V 5W40 in my Z4M, everything feels better with this lighter oil.

TWS 10W60 gets sheared down to a light 50wt oil anyways after few hundred miles of usage.

BMW only spec'ed 10W60 oil for M cars because a bad batch of rod bearings was causing M3's to blow up (not the car itself, just the S54 motor). Prior to that, BMW Castrol 5W30 was spec'ed for E46 M3s and M5s.

I'll send my oil sample to Blackstone for an analysis, if everything checks out okay, I'm gonna try GC 0W30 next.

SNIP
Please explain what you mean by "everything feels better with this lighter oil". Do you mean it feels better when rubbed between your thumb and index finger? Do you get better gas mileage? Does your engine sound different? Does the engine "feel" more powerful?
These are all rhetorical questions so I don't expect an answer.

jim,

yes, I get better mileage, motor revs faster...and it certainly takes less freeway driving to get the oil up to the operating temp.

Is the car more powerful? I don't know since I don't have any dyno chart to prove that.

Oh yeah. GC 0w30 certainly runs better in a Ferrari Enzo than some Shell 10W60.

Ferrari is even pickier about their oil than BMW M,

plus we don't have Ferarri's we have BMW's
and BMW requires M owners to use Castrol TWS 10w60 oil, Period

They say you "can" use a quart of other viscosity to top up but isn't recommended,
Why is there such an issue when it comes to accepting the oil for M engines?

and its not just here, Go to any M specific board (M3 Post, M3 Forum M5 Forum etc) and there are the same stupid arguments about oil,

Just accept you are to use the oil BMW tells you, Plus I have heard from a few BMW techs that if the engine blows (I know thats worst case scenario) BMW sends a sample of the oil before they warranty the engine,
Apparently they are not obliged to warranty the engine if you use the wrong oil and that is the end of it,

How true that is I'm not sure, But this was told to me on two separate occasions by two separate technicians,
I'd rather just use the oil we are told to use and save any warranty issues that might arise,
There is NO over the counter oil BMW approved for use in M engines other than what you can buy at the dealer (in the US)
