Center Storage Compartment

Hello -

My Z4 M Coupe's center storage compartment light stays on all of the time. Is this normal?

No. Your switch is broken.

^ Wow really? Mine has always been on since i bought the car last summer, i thought this was normal! Would something like this be covered under warranty? Or is there a simple fix?

It should be covered under warranty. The repair (replacing the switch) is fairly simple...do a "search". I believed I ran across someone posting a fix on here somewhere.

Likely not the switch itself but instead a broken plastic tab on the door that activates the switch

If someone could post the fix, much appreciated. I have the same problem as well but I recall that for certain MY, they changed the design over. Jamie (starscream) noticed this when he installed my Intravee II.

Had the same problem with my 2007 and took 3 trips to the dealerships to get it fixed (under warranty). The first idiot dealership could not figured it out and told me that was normal to have the light ON as long as the key is in the ignition. They end up replacing the whole door assembly.

I have the same issue in my 2005 convertible. I just bought the car 2 months ago so I had no idea that the light should be off!!

That's very likely the problem. I noticed that there is a switch at the bottom of the storage compartment that is actuated by a small plastic tab at the bottom of the lid. In my case you could clearly see where this tab had broken off.

My tab got bent once and I had to manually bend it back to get the light to shut off. Definitely not supposed to stay on the whole time. The tab should be like a fin in the very middle of the door on the bottom of it.

I used a small screw in place of the plastic tab for a while until I could bring the car to the dealership

I used a foam ear plug. wedge it in on top of the metal tab and close the door . plug compresses and close switch light goes out . cost $.01

You guys are right...it's most likely the tab that is broken - see the attached picture that I snatched from Bill's Web Space.

I feel like a moron, but I think mine has been broke since before I bought the car. lol

Will be taking it to the stealership soon.

Mine has the broken tab problem and the dealer repaired it even though it was out of warranty but now it's on all the time again and the tab isn't damaged so I guess the switch has gone out. Agreed, bad design.
