Extended Warranty
My car is an 06 M coupe, 32,000km (20,000 miles), factory warranty is up this August. Dealer is offering me an extended warranty plan for another 3 years at a cost of $2500. What's your thoughts?

BMW extended warranty is 2 yrs/100K mi so if your dealer is offering you 3 years, it must be the dealer's warraty. That will, in most cases, limit you to that one dealer for warranty work and generally is not a good idea. Also what are the terms? That is too pricy for the normal extended warranty.

Personally I would stay as far away as possible from non BMW extended warranties... a buddy bought one for his e36 m3 years ago and the motor developed vanos rattle, so the warranty replaced the vanos, which ultimately didn't fix the problem... after that the warranty would only perform repairs if you could document a part failure (ie show a broken part).
Since it was very difficult to actually show what component was causing the tick/rattle by buddy was stuck with a $1500 diagnosis fee, since the warranty wouldn't cover the repairs and the BMW dealership wanted $8,000 to rebuild the entire head (new lifters, cams, retainers etc.). Ultimately the problem led to a broken exhaust camshaft which pretty much destroyed the motor, which happened out of the warranty period of course. Basically the point is non-BMW warranty companies will try to slither their way out of any major repair job, therefore its best to just pocket the cash. Besides the s54 is very reliable at this point in its life, worst thing that is likely to happen is a vanos failure which is typically ~$2500 anyways, so it would be a wash $$$ wise. If it was me, I would stay away from any warranty that isn't BMW or BMW CPO.

I bought the extended maintenance within the first year that covers the car through the entire CPO period. Less than 2,000, considering the brakes are 1,300 it will definitely pay for itself.

At one time no one but the original owner could purchase an extended warranty in the US (or the dealer could CPO the car). That has now changed, at least in the US, so that any owner can purchase the extended warranty.
I believe for my M I was quoted $3600 or something like that. I made the decision to pass. Note the warranty is transferable for like $50 and if you sell the car you can be refunded a prorated portion of the cost. |
