Z4MR - hot start problems
I had a problem today where I drove the car for about an hour, stopped and switched off and about 10 mins later tried to start it, but all I got was a "click" sound from the engine bay, starter motor wasn't turning at all. The oil temperature was at 100deg C at the time. I let the car cool for about 10 more minutes, and when I tried to start it it started normally.
I repeated this whole exercise when I got home, i.e. switched off, tried to start, nothing, left it to cool for a while and started with no fuss. I am going to take it in next week, but any ideas on what may be the problem? |

start with a battery check up just for good measure....you'd be surprised on how many weird problems can be solved by a new battery...

The problem is probably cause by one of the relays. I have same problem with my DD Honda and it was the main relay. See if you could look at the schematic and check those relays. Good luck

Did you change your clutch stop?
I had the same issue and it's simply because plastic and rubber parts expand when it's hot out. All I had to do was to screw IN my new clutch stop about 1/4 of an inch.... solved my problem. Best way to know if is the clutch stop is to remove it (if you have a an after market one) Good luck. |

Thanks chaps. Must admit my first guess is a battery too (6yrs old, and I often open/close the roof with the car off, just using the key).
However, why does it only happen when the car is hot, and has been driven for a while (surely this would charge up a dying battery)? |

Old or any troublesome battery would not give this problem (a loose connection might) so start from there. Do you have any trouble with other things like radio or light? Anyhow, it is most likely one of the relays ( as they greatly affected by heat)

any update to this? i just got a 2006 z4mr last week and already having an issue, the same as OPs it sounds like
I used to have a z4 3.0l and had this same problem. I replaced the starter and and it fixed it. The job was surprisingly easy to do from the top of the car. Is changing the starter on the z4m just as easy as the 3.0? anybody done it and have any advice? thanks |

If the later, I'd check for an after-market clutch stop that's out of adjustment, or a faulty clutch switch before moving on to other things. Either one of those scenarios would disable the starter. Starter shouldn't be that much different I'd think. But no comparison or actual experience with that. |

i was getting a click at first, then nothing for a while. All the lights would power on, and the service records say the battery was changed less than 2 years ago.
I tired again a few minutes ago after the car has cooled for a bit. First try and nothing, no click. I held the key in the start position for 10-15 seconds and it started to turn, but I let it go before I realized it was working. I tried again and nothing I finally was able to locate the starter (its dark outside already), gonna pick up a replacement tomorrow morning. Looks like I might be able to get it out from the top without taking the intake manifold off. If memory serves, the bolts are E12's? Hopefully this is as easy as it looks Thanks Update: Indeed you can replace the starter without removing the manifold. I replaced it earlier today and wrote about it here: http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=777861 Last edited by yousefnjr; 12-04-2012 at 07:28 PM.. |
