I was researching possible problems on 2003 Z4s....

I read that some of the 2003s came with non-bosch coils that had problems. Has anyone's 03 had this problem? If so what were the symptoms and how many miles did your car have when it had this problem? Is there anything else to look out for? I am planning on buying an 03 with 77k miles and just wondering what to beware of. Thanks in advance.

Same problem affected nearly ALL BMWs with M54 engines. Check the service record of the '03 and see if the recall has been done on it. The defective coils are Bremi coils and if you remove the engine cover you should be able to see if they're Bosch or Bremi coils.

If that car was serviced at all, even once at a dealership in the last 3 years, the Bosch/Bremi recall would have been done. Symptoms are either a rough idle followed by check engine lights, or symptoms similar to a mis-fire, or just simply a check engine light.

I've got 64k on my 03 2.5 and aside from the coils, it's gone through two secondary air pumps. Probably would have only been one if the shop had replaced the check valve the first time.

Roof hydraulics

I've also had the problem with the hydraulics for the roof motor housing flooding destroying the motors, good thing it was a warranty replacement as I'm sure it would be $$$$$$$.

I hope I miss all those problems too. I doubt I am under warranty now.
