AUX DIY

don't buy one for the z4..it's like $70! one for the E46 is only $32 with club discount at Tischer BMW

1)take the vent out (use another DIY)

2)unscrew two screws on the headunit and pull out.

3)insert the cable into back of the head unit. If there is a black plug already occupying the space, remove it and insert the AUX cable. I believe it is for a CD changer

4)POP open the ashtray, unscrew 1 screw and slowly pry apart the console w/buttons

5)take the aux cable and drop it behind the headunit and should drop down to where you can grab and pull from bottom

6)drill a hole on the ashtray on the slanted part(just my preference) big enough for the aux cable to go through, then POP out the empty flat part with a hole thingy and get rid of the plastic cone that is behind it.

7)put the aux cable through, put the face on, screw the face on and you are done

I used 82 11 0 149 390 and installed in the panel below the climate controls in 2004 w/out navigation.

Holy thread resurrection but funnily enough I was reading threads on this mod today

One question for you, are the controls on the steering wheel usable with this retro fit to control the iPod?

Adding the AUX input port only allows you to plug in your iPod using a mini-plug RCA cable. There is absolutely no interface to the iPod other than that.

If you want to interface with your iPod you need to add the BMW iPod adapter. I have no part number for this as it was installed by the previous owner. With this adapter, which plugs into the head unit in place of the CD changer, you are basically fooling the head unit into thinking that your iPod is a six-disc CD changer. You have to have five playlists on your iPod whose names start with BMWn, where n is a number from one to 5, e.g., BMW1 Rock, BMW2 Jazz, etc. Choosing disc 6 plays all five playlists. You can use the steering wheel buttons to change tracks up and down. There is no way to shuffle and every time you pick a different playlist it plays it from the beginning. Also, this will only work with certain generation iPods. It works with my nano 3G, but not my 5G.

Most people go with the third-party DICE unit, although this has had mixed reviews.

Could you explain in more detail how to remove the vent/headunit? Or post up the other how to? Thanks!

I have done this more than 10 times I think. You can just slide a credit card in the gap between the vent and dash trim on top where the tabs are and that will release the tabs (one at a time).

I got everything installed but I can't figure out how to get the radio to pick up my phone. I can still only switch between CD and Radio. How do I put it in AUX mode?

Also, can you verify that I plugged the cable in correctly? It fit in there several ways.

You sure it's plugged into the correct hole?
See page 12 here.

Once it's hooked up correctly, the radio will automatically recognize it and add AUX to the mode selection.

I did exactly what Black Sapphire showed. I removed the black wire that were plugged in there and put the AUX cable in its place. I tried flipping it and I still couldn't get AUX mode when I turned on the radio.

One thing I noticed is that the cable I pulled out is a 12 pin connector. The AUX cable I replaced it with is a 10 pin. It fits but there are always two standalone pins... Is this a problem?

I ordered the one without Navigation and it was definitely NOT the right part number.

This is the connection type you need for a 3.0i with a business CD radio:

I just got done installing this aux input on my e85. when I pulled out the radio, there were two plugs on the bottom right corner (black and white). You need to use that black 12 pin connector. take the grey plastic cover off of the aux input connector, and eject the three wires from it (you can use a small sharp object to just push them out). then you'll need to pull the black cover off of the 12-pin connector (radio) and plug in the three wires from the aux 10-pin connector. So you're technically merging you're 10-pin aux connector into the radios 12-pin connector. finally you just plug it back in, test it before you reassemble everything, and you're done! this part took me less than five minutes. getting the vents out took me the longest. here's a diagram of the slots where you're supposed to insert your aux connector's wires. Hope this helps!

I have the business CD one in a 2003 Z4 and tried to install this one today and it does nothing. I don't think its any different than the ones that are about 6 dollars on ebay. I had no other connector where this one fit, but do have a cd changer in case that effected anything.
