Z4M sensitive on throttle

Hello everybody, I bought Z4M coupe with 30000 km from my friend whi bought it as a new car

BUT, I have also E46 M3 which has a lot in common.
In E46 M3 the throttle in normal mode is comfy and smooth, sharp reactions from throttle comes with Sport mode.
In E86 Z4M the throttle is extremly sharp in Normal mode and after pressing Sport button, there is no difference.

Is it normal or is it strange?
For the road use it's horrible.
Thank you very much for replies! (Sorry for my english, not using it often)

Did the previous owner have a tune done on the car or programming done?

He bought it with 1200 km from the local dealer in 2009 when the dealer was in insolvency (owner of the dealership robbed all the money from dealers bank accounts and dissapeared) and complete dealership was closed that time (he bought it from seizure). So nobody knows what was done in that 1200 km.

But for me it reacts strange to the throttle pedal. So is it normal in Z4M or do you think there is something done with the software?

There is leterally no difference in throttle pedal response in Normal/Sport mode

Something definitely sounds wrong.
On the Z4M sport mode is VERY different from normal mode.

Did you check for any error codes?
It could also be a bad gas pedal unit sending a bad signal.

There is no error message, so it should act same as it is in E46 M3? Will official BMW servis install original software if there is any upgraded one? I'm really uncomfortable with this setting, it's totally not relaxing drive

There should be a difference that can be felt between sport on and off. Even with a tune I can still feel the difference. Sport on is way too twitchy for me.

Maybe try unplugging the battery and allowing adaptions to reset. Might help.

BMW should be able to flash the ECU back to stock.

It may be stuck in sport mode for some reason, I havent had it happen but the above poster is right. There is a very big difference from normal to sport mode, I can tell right away when Its on or off even without looking at the button.

Definitely something off as people have mentioned. I make it a habit to turn on the sport mode button as soon as I turn the car on (always drive with it ON), and can certainly tell within a few stabs of the accelerator if I forgot to turn it on.

Just had to change the battery, because it was parked for a year, so disconnecting was done. I was driving this exact car many times before and it always acted like this.

In sport mode it's almost impossible to start smooth from zero. For me it's like there is 0% throttle and 1 mm later it's 20% throttle. You just start very fast or have to burn the clutch... was stucked in traffic jam today

Thanks for reply, I have to visit BMW dealer

I prefer linear throttle response, but it seems there is something wrong in my car. Really liked how was M3 E46 acting in Normal mode when it was stock, but this Z4M is acting really crazy

Is there anything connected to the throttle, like a sprint booster? I am not sure where exactly they connect on the throttle but take a look at their site and see if someone installed that on your car.

That was first thing I was checking, nothing special connected, just original connection.
I bought used car previously with TuneKit Power pedal (320si) and was removing it

I've owned both E46M3 and Z4M. There is a distinct difference in sport mode between the two cars (unless a service update has changed things since 2011).

One of the main differences is when you have the accelerator pressed while hitting the sport mode. In the E46M3 if you are at anything less than full throttle you will instantly feel the sudden change of sensitivity in the pedal. It is a very obvious change. In the Z4M you will feel no change in this same scenario. In the Z4M the system waits until you release the pedal before applying the new pedal sensitivity. I think it does this to avoid a rough transition. That's the main difference. Once the sport mode settings are applied, the difference in pedal sensitivity is very obvious.

When I first got my Z4M, after owning an E46M3, I thought the sport mode was broken until I realized I had to release the pedal before the sport mode initiated.

There is no difference, have done about 400 km, first kilometres on windy roads in countryside with Sport button lighting, last kilometers at town and problem is, that Sport mode is sporty, but Normal mode is no difference

Have E46 M3 and Z4M at same time and I can clearly say when I'm driving on sport and when I drive on normal even when the car is stripped. Here in Z4M is really no difference, just Sport mode all the time...

Go to a local bmw specialist who can read your ECU. There are some tuners that leave the sport mode always on. Check for that and let us know your findings.

So if I understand well, you think it could be solved just with coding? That would be great

I am not an expert, but I have read some tuners leave the sport mode always on.
They can program to don't make the sport button to light up.
So I am guessing maybe if a cheap tune like this is made maybe it is one possible explanation for your problem.

In your case it is not normal what is happening, so you have to search what version of software has the ECU. If my bmw mechanic told me that it has the OEM BMW software then you have to search other issues, which I can not imagine what it would be....

So there is an aftermarket software, but now I'm not sure what to choose:
1) try to load original SW with risk of power decrease
2) live with extra sharp starts (will use it mainly for weekends)
3) try to find someone who will try just to change the setting of Sport button

With just basic coding (Carly for BMW Pro App), there is no option for Sport button (as I expected)

So your local BMW engineer told you that you have a tuned software on your car, as far as I understand.

If that is the case, there is another solution. You can go and buy a new tune from Epic Motorsports, ESS, TTFS who are known in the forums for their quality and they leave the button on/off as far as I know. But that is an expensive way.

To be honest in your case I would switch to the OEM software if you are running stock all the other parts of your car, since the 10-15 hp will not make you a huge difference and you will be more happy with the car being able to use it more often. If you plan to add and modify your car then you can stay as you are and then do another tuning that suits your needs.

If you load the original software at the dealer, it may cost you more than getting a new tune.

If you get a new tune, they can set the sport button to normal. (this is how mine is)

Try to do a throttle reset. Mine was almost undriveable when I bought it 2 years ago. Ignition off, turn key to on position- wait 15 seconds. turn ignition off. wait 15 seconds again. Turn key on.
