'06 Z4 BMW assist on sticky steering
I have been talking with my SA about my "sticky" steering problem and he indicated that BMW was "assisting" repairs for some Z4s which are out of warranty but still have relatively low miles. I have 40K miles. I took it in last week. BMW agreed to go 50/50 and will replace the entire steering assembly including the electric motor. Cost to me $1200.

Sticky steering
BMW's response is just plain sorry.
I experienced this sticky steering issue recently. My Z4 3.0si had been parked in the direct sun in 107 degree Texas heat. I got in and tried to turn a corner. I noticed more effort was needed to turn the wheels and it was jerky and resistant. I had read of this defect from this very forum so I knew what the problem was immediately. Thanks to all for that bit of knowledge. BMW should have recalled all affected vehicles and issued a proper fix. I probably won't spend $2,400 to fix the problem. Again, I've only experienced it once in 15 months. Sorry. Just sorry!

Mine was a constant situation in the summer heat. I just couldn't live with it. Given some of the stories on here about BMW refusing to do anything, I was pleasantly surprised they paid half. And pleasantly surprised it was $1200 as some suggested that the total cost was over $3K.

I've noticed it a little heavy once or twice, but nothing I'd be willing to shell out $2400 or even $1200 to fix. I'm guessing those cars in southern climates are seeing it worse than us in cooler climates. Good to see they are helping a little on it. But I agree, should be a recall.

I had the problem back when I had my Z4. The dealer reset the computer which eliminated the problem completely and lasted until I traded for my 135i.

This must have been a coincidence. There should be no correlation between the computer settings and the sticky steering issue.

What years does this affect? How can BMW refuse to fix something if it is under warranty? If it is something that happens intermittently, can they deny you service just because it doesn't happen to the tech when they take the car out for a test drive? How does replacing the steering assembly and motor fix it? Won't the same thing happen to the new equipment or did they redesign the assembly and motor?

I had the problem on my 06si - got it fixed last summer under warranty. The total cost to me was free, but out of warranty it would have been $3000+. There were numerous postings on steering problems with the NHTSA, but I think they closed that case by concluding that no recall was needed. So BMW gets away with sticking it to those folks that get outside of warranty coverage. Brutal.

I got the car back Wed. Did not feel like it was fixed to me. But thought maybe it was all in my head. Gave it to my indie mechancic to drive it for a couple of days and he confirmed my fears. I am unhappy to say the least. Took it back to the dealer yesterday. Will update as I learn more.

Update: Took the car back in. Interestingly enough the SA agreed with me, although the tech insisted it was "normal." While the SA was driving the car again after disagreeing with the tech, the DSC light and brake light came on. When the tech finally ran a diagnostic, guess what, the steering angle was incorrect. They adjusted it. I got the car back on Friday and after driving it this weekend, I do feel like it is fixed for now. Kudos to the SA for agreeing with me and sticking with it. Not so much for the tech who was probably a little defensive about his work being questioned.

Z4 steering
My 2005 Z4 38000 miles steering failed May 2011, Call BMW customer assistance and they told me to take it back to the dealer. Got the run around for days from BMW customer assistance and finally convinced the senior service writer that he should ask for policy adjustment. He sent email to his area manger and the next day it was approved under warranty policy. I had to pay the labor. Cost me $500. I thought it was decent deal, can't wait until I get my new BMW X5.
