glad you caught it!
i'm a little concerned about these in general. i inspected mine about 11k mi ago, but passing the 71k mark last month has me thinking about these and bottom-end bearings. have you decided to go OE or cryo-aftermarket yet?

probably the dr. vanos C300.
http://drvanos.com/index.php?option=...&id=5&Itemid=6 I sent a PM to kaiv about doing the work, I'll see what he says. $800 for the part alone. damn. the broken tab is still in there, caught in the little recess. I tried pulling it out but its too large to fit through the opening. i'm kind of concerned about it flopping around in that hole until I can get it replaced. anyone in LA replaced the exhaust hub before? its a bit more than I can tackle alone. |

Can I ask you all a stupid, novice nub question please in regards to this?
I understand the issue, but I also noted that OP said he discovered the issue while doing a valve adjustment. My car just had the valve adjustment done a couple weeks ago at a local Indie shop. Is a broken tab such as this something they would have looked for/seen while doing the adjustment, or is it something I would have specifically had to ask them to look for? I asked them to check out as much as they could regarding the car while it was there, and it got a 100% clean bill of health. Do you think they would have seen if these tabs were broken during the valve adjustment? Thanks for your help/advice ahead of time. |

Ok thanks. The shop is very reputable and they have a guy who basically only works on ///M cars. Maybe I'll call them next week and inquire regardless. Best of luck with your issue, thanks for making the thread.

just had my valve cover off and checked this out on mine while i did some shim changes, all good but I'm going to slowly start buying pieces over the coming months / years for a big overhaul on the weaker parts of the engine... this piece needs the turbo toy cobalt hub imo.. the stock tabs are just too weak. That said some go on for 100+k miles!!

anyone have an opinion on driving with the broken tab? obviously better not to, but I don't know how quickly I'll be able to get kaiv up here to do the work. i know i could take it to a shop, but i would prefer to assist kaiv with the job and increase my s54 knowledge.
i mean, if i hadn't checked, it would just continue to sit in there undisturbed, right? |

not necessarily , you was lucky as these do fall into the void sometimes , but anyone that has this failure doesnt actually know most of the time and is usually undertaking normal maintenance which its discovered. i wouldnt drive it but i would absolutely be their to take it apart, I've just learned so much about my car doing my own shims!! I've also wondered why on gods earth I'm spending so much to have someone do this for me.... it really is simple! tow the car and get stuck it yourself and learn about the wonderful s54! While your their stick in the c300 vanos hub and do a full overhaul!

fuck me. my banjo bolt just broke. in half. before i even hit the torque spec. so i was lucky enough to get a banjo bolt with a bad spot in the casting or something.
does anyone know what the banjo bolt part number is? getbmwparts seems to have removed almost all the parts from their catalog for our car. |

Which Banjo bolt are you referring to?
The one for the vanos high pressure line is Hollow bolt part# 07119905175 The one for the return pipe on the side of the valve cover is Hollow bolt part# 07119905427 |

I went through this about 6-8 mos ago. My Indy did the work. Turbotoys/Scott Johnson makes the C300 hubs. DrVanos resells them at about $100 premium. I'll send you a PM with more info. I didn't replace my disk as the break seemed recent and the disk was still in decent shape.

Exactly the same thing that happened to me.
It will happen to all of us sooner or later.
