'09 Z4 to get 321HP N54. '11 to get V8.

Mods feel free to bump this to 'Other Cars' but I just saw this article on topspeed.com.

What is interesting (and I know its rumor) is that the N54 is rated at 321HP. Is that the actual current power output I wonder.

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-new...s-ar40669.html

Also the 2011 will get the M3's V8. Kids will be out of the house by then. May have to plan!!

COOL!

I like the sound of the 2.5 liter 231hp direct-injected 6!

I think we have already figured out that the N54 is really closer to 330 hp so I think they're just being a little more honest with the 321 rating.

Garage List
According to dyno tests by Automobilemag and Edmunds, I thought it was putting out more like 350 HP and 360 Torque.

That 321 hp is probably the DIN rating.

The only Dyno's for stock I've seen so far are 320's and 310's... And that's fantastic... As I sit with a standard Si, I can't imagine why anyone would want more other than as an Ego boost. Getting current M power to the ground is already a chore in the z.

Assume by 2011, the Z4 will be the replacement for the E85/86 version?

Can't really see how a V8 could fit within the confines of the engine bay of the current Z4.

And wonder if the weight of the V8 will be significantly higher than the current N52B30 found in my 3.0si? Certainly the V8 config would mean a shorter length than an I6 engine so weight distribution won't be too negatively impacted.

nice, I guess I better start saving my pennies for either the new M roadster with V8 or the 988 Boxster

the V8 sound (along with the price advantage) may keep me in the BMW camp for a few more years!

IIRC, it's lighter than the S54

You should have seen what Hartge did 4 years ago when they shoved a V8 from the M5 into the Z4. There's plenty of room under the hood and not surprising that it fits. AC Schnitzer did a similar swap with the recent M5 engine into what they call the Topster V8.

Hartge also has recently installed a twin turbo engine into the Z4.

If the new M3's V8 finds its way under the hood of the Z4, that would be one hell of a devastating car considering that the new V8 is actually lighter than its I6 predecessor.

Maybe I should start saving now so I can buy the new Z4 later... or.. nah.. I'm better off saving for a house.

There is plenty of room for a V-8. Some guys are putting GM LS series V-8s in Z3s with plenty of room between the struts. A V-8 is shorter than a six, and the GM V-8 is narrower than a overhead cam V-8. The weight of a LS all aluminum motor is very close to the BMW Z4M motor.
Was at the Spartenburg BMW Performance Center two weeks ago, and one of the driving instructors quipped that they had had informal drag races at the Center (instructors driving) between the new turbo 330i and Z4M. They are very close, and the winner is dependent on who gets the best launch. Therefore, he thought the turbo six power was quite understated.
