Stock muffler mod out there?
Since I was bored yesterday and running without mufflers, I decided to open up a muffler to see what I can or can't do with it. Will most likely pull out the glass and reseal to start with. See where that goes. Also plan to paint the bottom and tips semi-gloss black. I was amazed at how much glass is packed in all the chambers. Once I put these back together, I will remount to see if this was just a waste of time.

Sounds like an interesting project. Maybe post some pictures if you have any?

+1 very interested to see what the stocker looks like on the inside.
I've been toying with the idea of running a straight tube internally from the inlet to one of the two tips. By swiss cheesing this tube & using an external bypass valve you'd end up with a dual mode muffler. Similar to this flowtech design http://www.holley.com/types/Warlock.asp |

Well, I was contemplating a straight pipe but since I have been running muffler-less for the past couple of weeks I decided to do this project. Straight pipe/no pipe is too ricey and loud. Not sure what to expect from this mod but will see tomorrow when I get a chance to remount.
Very easy, really just needed the time during the past 2 days to do this. I first picked the top side due to the welds that would hold the panels in place after I did my cutting. Also, because I did not want any evidence that this had even been done when it is lifted, checked, eyeballed from below. Picked my lines and cut with a grinder. ABout 20 minutes for each one, tops. Look how much friggin glass is packed into just one of these!!!!!! Once the glass is removed, the cuts are metal patched with the liquid equivalent of welding. I plan to leave these unfinished until I finalize what the hell this project is even getting me, lol. Primed after metal patching. Final coat of low gloss black, no clear coat until I know for sure I plan to keep this setup. Here's what the upper side will look like, roughly. Unfinished for now.

I'm getting ready to do cutouts right before the mufflers on mine.

Anybody know the size of piping on stock mufflers? I was guessing 2.5 i.d. and was gonna go with a set of these right before both mufflers and turn them to where the exit is facing the wheels on each side. Gonna secure the caps with wingnuts so I can remove or recap them by hand and have easy access.

Didn't take any shots of the innards. Thought that was a given, maybe not.
Hopefully remounting tonight, and may get a sound check. We'll see. Weather sucks today through Wednesday.

hmmm....are there any baffles inside or is it perforated tubing w/ filler on the sides? I would probably get that welded shut after you decide to keep it, as the JB weld may accumulate leaks down the line.
Food for thought, my dirtbike has a muffler that requires packing every so often. And it's dyno proven hp when packed over being empty....but then again, we're just in it for the sound

That was a complete waste. Sound is stock, the same as with the glass packed in.
Well, at least I know it's a three chambered system to mess with. Will sleep on it and figure a boring option between pipes and chambers. Dumps are just too loud for me, and stock just won't cut it.

If your dead set on getting a custom setup, I'd recommend starting w/ the delete and then add a muffler from there on.

How much did each muffler weigh... do you know?
I'm considering a muffler delete for weight, but want to avoid droning and excessively high noise levels. Probably delete my muffler, run it all the way out, and then go from there with perhaps a Supersprint if it drones too much or is too loud. Great posting by the way. You should come to Fedex Field and join us at WDCR SCCA.
